Remembering Marilyn French

The late feminist author reminded women that "they were not alone and not crazy."

@captcrisis, @hotrod

Well, I think it is part of the human condition to blame the other sex. Everybody has had bad experiences with the other sex, so it is easy to generalize and blame all the sex for the grievances produced by some of its members. And this goes for men and women alike.

What radical feminism does is to introduce a theory which systematizes and rationalizes this whining and rage. It's not "every man is the same" but "every man is part of a patriarchy whose objective is to oppress women", "all men are rapist and that's all what they are".

This does not only justifies and amplifies the rage against the male sex but it also makes it respectable and "scientific". You cannot say in a college: "All men are pigs" but you can talk about "the objectification of women on behalf on men", which is the same (the misguided conclusion that men are only interested in sex regarding women).

I'm with you. It seems all self identifying feminists today have some male horror story in their background....whether daddy left or abused them, they are still recovering from a nasty divorce, or were a rape victim, etc., the one unifying theme in a feminists life is the lack of good men. Apparently that gives them license to smear the whole gender. It's also self fulfilling, I mean what quality guy is gonna stick around and listen to the anti-male screed ?,,,only the worst losers.

if it affects me in any way

I have a moral obligation to speak my mind about it.

Feminism affects me and everyone else, thus it is perfectly OK to state one's mind regarding any issues it brings up.

But then, I DO understand feminism was never about fairness or decency or reality or facts, but it is only a hate group dedicated to sheer hatred of men and about women getting granted priviliges on men's backs.

Frankly, I think feminism ought to be outlawed, like the KKK or Nazi skinhead movements. It is no better just because it comes wrapped in a pink bow. Leave it to your librul male friends to get tricked by that propaganda.

Beyond Power

Has everyone forgotten her most important (in my opinion) book, "Beyond Power"?? Even when her historical survey of matriarchal societies was a bit on the thin side, her theory of how to move beyond power "over" was a concept that changed my life. "The Women's Room" may have made her a household name for a minute, but "Beyond Power" was her enduring legacy.

@tabett

You might as well ask why so many dittoheads never miss an opportunity to go on the discussion boards at Slate to flame the "filthy libruls". There was a Christian forum on About.com I used to read which got it's fair share from the "Why don't you idiots leave your imaginary friend at home, etc." crowd as well.

Some people just don't feel complete unless they're apopleptic with rage--it's just their natural state.

The healthiest thing is to just figure out who to ignore and not give them any ammo.

There is no reason to believe we are angry. I certainly am not. I like to read what feminists think, since as a white male, they are clearly my enemy. I also like to point how often the feminist ideology relies on lies, misinformation and propaganda to further their special interest group status. And also to remind all of you there are many pro-family, pro-father democrats that look at radical feminism as just as extreme as the right wing nutjobs from the other side.

Just a few simple questions

Why are so many angry men trolling in Broad Sheet? Did they get laid off from their jobs and blame the women who are still working? Are they angry with their wives who pay little or no attention to their ceaseless whining? Have their mothers' basements, in which they live, become too confining for their boundless, but unappreciated talents? Can't they get laid,

even by pros? Ha, ha, ha. Whatever their difficulties happen to be, they do not concern me in Broad Sheet. This place is for stories about BROADS, just in case you were too dumb to get it in the column's title.

As I have suggested elsewhere, ask Salon for a place of your own. Call it Bull Sheet.

Works of art must be understood within the art historical time frame in which they were created

Many other writers, painters, composers etc. are ridiculed for their work now, but were celebrated for their art in the past and will be celebrated again in the future, albeit posthumously.

It is interesting that in, "The Women's Room", the character Valerie, who was politically out and proud, happily polyamorous with much younger men, helped the older women trying to navigate the good old white boys network of the grad school to which they were first women ever grudgingly admitted, is the only one that men, especially, seem to remember. Yes, after her daughter's rape, she joined a very radical group and then died for her political sins. Happy now?

But what about Mira, the main character? What about Martha, Lily, Adele, Bliss, Natalie, Samantha, Oriane, Iso, Kyla, Ava and the all the other characters in this book? What about their stories?

Try reading the "The Women's Room" again if you can find it. Young women may be surprised to see that it still resonates with them.

the more I ffind out about these dying feminists

the more every single one of them seems to be a big brat.

parse these books, parse the concepts in them.

basically, these toads are saying life should not affect women and only women negatively.

tell me this is the behavior or mature responsible adults.

I too could write a book like this about how men are all oppressed and how we have to be polite ad nauseam.

and it would have as much or MORE validity than that women are somehow in this position. society LETS women have their way, but for men, it is 'put up or shut up'.

men somehow have more brains, we realize to just piss and moan does little. then again, women have a built in support system in that if women squeak, men squirt oil at the problem.

but I see ZERO of the same mechanism back at the men from the women. it is all about being able to tolerate inhuman conditions for so many men.

So SCREW FRENCH, she just causes more problems for men, and for women, isolates the two sexes, who ought to be working together for a better world, legitimizes immature female braying even more.

I grew up in a world that thought I was to be treated with hate and suspicion because I have a penis. How is it that this is not reported in the New York Times that this is the world we men grow up in?

Women have exhausted their goodwill. The male is on the ascendancy, maybe one day soon, we men might have the rights afforded to the women today, such as reproductive rights, the rights to peace in one's household, the right not to have to put oneself in harm's way for the republic, the right to TRUE freedom of expression, etc.

We are living the handmaids tale, but the sexes are REVERSED today.
