Miss USA's gay marriage controversy

Something interesting actually happened at that boring old beauty pageant?

The letters thread is now closed.

Opposite marriage

dumb bitch? No way, she is a genius coming up with such a phrase sans preparation. Go opposite marriage!

And in line with another nonsensical post I made today, how abouts 'Other' marriage in lieu of interracial marriage.

Monday, April 20, 2009 11:30 AM

a compromise

Perhaps an agreement on gay marriage could be reached by the assignation of the term Anti-Marriage (and anti-husband, anti-partner, anti-wedding)... gay and transgendered get the word 'marriage' applied to them (albeit modified) and all rights accorded and the jesus freaks can go around their business that the other folks are not having any marriage as they know it.

Perez Hilton

Is a dick, but good for him. I hate pagents anyway. Oh look at me and give me money because I'm pretty, look good in a dress and bikini but I can't actually speak my own mind, I have to be ready with the most bland, generic, non-offensive answers possible to any question given like ever! Tee hee aren't I cute!

Wouldn't it be nice...

If we really DID live in a country where you could choose same-sex or "opposite" marriage? I would have absolutely no objection to her saying it's right for HER that marriage should be between a man and a woman, if the first part of her statement were really true.

I totally HATE it

when a young attractive woman espouses a conservative viewpoint. For Pete's sake.

This makes for MUCH more interesting pagentry

I wish every contestant was asked such a perilous, difficult (...in a "pageant" sense of the word) question. Shoot, ask which parent they love more (and no, "both" isn't an option), or which apostle they'd like to bare-knuckle box with. Hey, throw in a word problem or some long division for good measure. That's just good TV.

I think that she believes she is pro-choice...

...and that she lives in the country of California.

;^)

Monday, April 20, 2009 12:06 PM

She'll be running for Vice President someday

She's as qualified as Sarah Palin. Also.

Come on Perez Grow Up

This dude is so out of line. So what she believes different than he does. She stated her position. This does not make her a dumb bitch.

So instead of saying I respect her view... he goes on a rampage. WHAT AN ASSHOLE. Perez Hilton not all gays respect your silly cartoonish view of the world. I am Gay but I would not want your loud mouth chubby ass is in my vicinity. You are a Joke.

Monday, April 20, 2009 12:17 PM

what did you think a former gay rights activist was going to say

Before he was trash, Perez was a known gay rights writer and activist. What did Donald Trump think he was going to say?

Monday, April 20, 2009 12:20 PM

By "opposite marriage"

Isn't she just trying to say "marriage between opposite genders", as opposed to "marriage between the same gender"?

Monday, April 20, 2009 12:23 PM

Why is this a controversy?

And why is this a controversy. She is stating her opinion. Is is supposed to say something she doesnt believe to make the gay crowd happy? Wait, I guess she is supposed to do that.

Good for her.

Monday, April 20, 2009 12:26 PM

cd

yes.... she said same sex marriage or opposite

Monday, April 20, 2009 12:27 PM

also such as

At first glance, I can't tell the difference between this chick and the other pageant contestant who gave a famously garbled response. Too bad since this question is more befitting of an answer that pleads "for the children." Such as.

Apology in advance for injecting my personal pet issue into this.

So how's that public school system working out for everyone? Kids seem to be graduating with reasoning ability, articulation, basic grasp of how government works, and appreciation for diversity?

Oh...no?

Being Miss is getting really hard

What about the good old questions about "What do you want to accomplish when you are Miss"? The ones who were easy to answer with the clichéd answer "I will fight for World Peace".

Look, Miss USA is not a contest about intelligence: this would be another kind of contest. That the girl has been able to find an answer that combines both points of view is a sign that she does not want to offend anybody, which is the adequate thing to do in this kind of contest where beauty is more important than intelligence or political positions.

First Amendment Anyone?

Hello? This woman was expressing her OPINION! She never said that she was against same sex marriage. Nor did she say she was for it. She only stated her opinion that she thought marriage should be between a man and a woman.

Since when do we jump on people if they have different beliefs then us?

Wow.

Monday, April 20, 2009 12:45 PM

She answered a question, that's all.

See, if she wants to think that marriage is between a man and a woman, she can go right ahead. If she thinks that marriage should be LEGISLATED as only man-woman, that's more of a problem. Unfortunately, she didn't get to answer the real issue of legislation--everyone's just jumping on her for personal beliefs.

What I thought was interesting was the initial boos from the crowd, quickly drowned out by loud cheers.

Monday, April 20, 2009 12:53 PM

She answered a question?

To all those who are defending this young woman by saying she merely answered a question or she merely stated her opinion and has a right to do so, could you please explain to me what exactly her answer was? At first she seemed to say that we live in a country where same-sex marriage is allowed (proving that she doesn't know what the current law is, although she may have been referring only to Massachusetts, Vermont, or Iowa), but then she stated she was against same-sex marriage.

So, before you go defending her right to her opinion, please clarify what her opinion is.

If only.

If only beauty pageants were about the beauty of one's mind or soul, instead of just the genes/jeans. Such topical and difficult questions should be standard fare in beauty contests, and contestants should not be judged on their position but on their ability to clearly articulate a rational basis supportive of whatever opinion they happen to hold.

Of course, by that standard, I don't think I've yet heard anyone on the "traditional" side that could win the crown based on the arguments I've heard so far (e.g., destroying the institution, harming children, denying religious freedom, etc., all of which are demonstrably false). It may indeed be possible to make a coherent, rational argument for denying same-sex marriage, and it may be that people avoid doing so for political reasons. Imagine how stunned and pleased we would all be if a beauty contestant were the first to make the rational argument. It might even make for a revival of beauty pageants.

If only.
