Hell, yeah: Obama on "Roe vs. Wade"

The president offers an eloquent endorsement of the right to choose -- and of women's rights in general.

Dear Mr. President,

When we said you had to fix the world in your first week, WE WERE KIDDING.

Seriously, it's good to tell elected officials when they do well, not just when they screw up. I couldn't be more pleased these first days.

wow

Having lived through Nixxxon, Reagan, and Bush I was happy to vote for Obama, yet not really believing, in my heart, that he could really do that much, that fast. But... Damn! This old hippy fart is about ready to give up and start hoping and believing again. And only the second day in.

I'm happy. very happy

Day 2, and he's already done half the stuff I wanted

Between this, and the Executive Orders on Gitmo and Torture, I've walking around misty-eyed all day. I some hope for the man, I voted and volunteered for him, but I was getting all set to see delays and half-measures, and being happy with what I got, even if it wasn't all or very much of what I wanted.

But Damn! My head is spinning, and I can't stop smiling.

I never thought I would see the day, the neocons and Clinton (William Jefferson, not Hil) had beaten all hope out of me, I would have been happy simply to see things not get worse. But wow. Wow wow wow.

Happy

to hear Broadsheet staff smacking a collective high five.

Now for the sound of Ms. Walsh smacking her lips on that plate of crow.

Common sense and decency...

... are back!

Thursday, January 22, 2009 02:10 PM

in the past 48 hours....

I've seen how real adults run a country.

First of all, his argument for better education and opportunities with the goal of reducing unintended pregnancies, thus reducing abortions, is exactly the argument we've needed a democrat to put forward.

He's not afraid. He's not afraid. He's fearless, but not reckless.

As complex as the issue at hand

I am so impressed and happy, not just because this statement is pro-choice, pro-equality and pro-fact/science, but that our President is setting a tone for taking a realistic look at the complex, interrelated issues surrounding abortion rather than turning it into a simplistic wedge issue.

Our Prez

Wow. It's like he actually cares. How...strange. I don't know if my mind can handle it.

Good to see leadership again.

"affordable contraception, accurate health information, and preventative services."

Never before have I seen the words "contraceptive" and "preventative services" in the same sentence on a President's agenda statement.

Clearly Obama intends to view contraceptives as a preventative service, and it is good to see our President take a firm stance on a matter that affects every sexually active straight couple.

Thanks Mr President, we really needed to put an end to the vagueness that has been the order of the day on reproductive rights for the past 8 years.

Good to see our executive branch take a firm stance on something other than the best way to kill people in struggling third world countries.

Obama Rocks!

I have a 6-year old daughter-Honey, this one is for you!!!

Thursday, January 22, 2009 02:27 PM

I'm all a-tingle

And so happy. I knew I was happy when Obama got elected, but did not know just how elated I would be with him in office. We misunderestimated GWB and now we have happily underestimated President Obama. Yaaaayyyy!

This is awesome, but I'm still waiting for the concrete policy changes on this...

This is a much-needed statement from the White House, but I am also waiting with somewhat baited breath for the executive order to repeal the global gag rule. I'd hoped that this would come today, but it's getting awfully late.

Thursday, January 22, 2009 02:38 PM

Hopefully he'll rest on the 7th day

You guys act as though you've been locked in a box for the past 8 years. Last I checked, we all had jobs and families, went to church and the occasional vacation, took day trips to the beach, went skiing sometimes. Bought lattes in the winter and ice cream in the summer. Flew kites. Laughed.

I truly hope those of you on this board haven't spent the last 8 years angry. That would be such a waste because yesterday really wasn't so bad.

Yes, yes, yes!

From someone who was raised as a conservative Catholic, then gave it up in college... I can repeat chapter and verse all of the solid right opposition to abortion. I grew up carrying the signs. My mom still does.

I grew up with the thinking that goes like this:

--Tell kids that they shouldn't have sex until they're married.

--Tell kids that they're wrong to have sex.

--Tell kids that there is something wrong with them, they are dirty, bad, and poorly raised if they even think about it.

--Birth control will only send the wrong message. Why should anyone need it if they don't have sex?

--Girls who get pregnant are bad girls.

--Boys who get girls pregnant can disappear off to college and that's ok.

--The only option if you get pregnant is to endure months of public scorn, give the baby up for adoption, then endure more public scorn until you're old enough to move away, because everyone knows what you did.

--The public scorn for your parents who go to church here will never end, because they had damaged children.

--Sex is BAD.

--Until you're married.

--Then it's OK but only to have kids.

Thank you Obama for calling out the ridiculousness! Hooray for science over ideology!

High Fives All Around

We have a President who understands that the "culture of life" is about the living, breathing citizens of the United States, who can be trusted to make their own choices about their bodies and their lives. And the more government enables them in that mission, the happier everyone will be.

Thursday, January 22, 2009 02:45 PM

Oh Hell Yeah!

I never ever thought I would hear those words from our commander-in-chief. It says it so elegantly and logically at the same time. I love it! The man just amazes me now. I purposely kept my expectations low for his first 100 days, but whoa! He is still impressing me on his 2nd day alone. And I thought closing Gitmo was awesome, this is a giant step up. Obama, you rule!

Thursday, January 22, 2009 02:46 PM

High Fives

We're all going to be high-fiving ourselves until our hands turn raw. Thank goodness.

Rove V Wade ...

. anniversary another day to celebrate.

Thursday, January 22, 2009 03:01 PM

Wow!

Never thought I would read such a clear message - supporting right to decide to continue a pregancy, support accurate information, supporting the right that girls and boys have access to the same opportunities . . .

I am actually shocked that a politician, even a pro-choice one, would be so clear.

Oh - and about the last 8 years? A lot of us lost jobs. A lot of us lost health insurance because of it. A lot of us have jobs that don't have vacation or sick days. It has been layoff city since 2001. And incremental destruction of what I believe America stands for. Angry for 8 years? Watching people who are dismantling America and who will never bear responsibility (that's for the serfs and scooters) that is justification for anger.

Obama is the first president I ever voted for. All the others were votes against.

This is great!
