Biden's difficult balance

Tonight's vice-presidential debate raises a tricky question for Joe Biden: How to beat Sarah Palin without coming off as a dick.

The letters thread is now closed.

See that's the thing, be a dick

Beat her into the ground and kick her when she's down then pick her up and pimp slap her some more. They would do it to you.

Tired of the hand-wringing

over whether or not Biden should be gentle with the self-described pitbull. Democrats come across as marshmallow-y when they play nice--God, remember Edwards practically kissing Cheney's ring in '04?

It's a debate, folks. Not a feminist, PC love-in, not an ice cream social. Slam her with grace, slam her with intelligence, but for Christ's sake SLAM HER!

It's be easier for Biden if Palin were a little bit more qualified

If she were coherent when speaking Biden would have the relatively easy task that fell to Lloyd Bentsen in 1988, namely making Dan Quayle look the fool on national television.

Unfortunately for Biden, his task is closer to that of a martial arts practitioner sparring with a complete novice. His opponent could do just about anything, even something so stupid it hurts both of them.

Why is no one wondering if Palin will come off as a "bitch" then?

Just wondering... everyone seems so concerned that Biden will come off as a dick, but to me, Palin comes off as a smarmy, sarcastic bitch. With all the blather about Biden's pitfalls, I wonder if Palin's likability is being exaggerated.

I doubt I am alone. But then again I think Bush comes off as a high-school jock style dickhead. Apparently there are lots of people who like assholes.

Fuck it. Biden - make her cry.

Biden's difficult balance? NO WAY!

There was no kindness or balancing acts for Hillary Clinton who held her ground with grit and savvy. I am sick and tired of pundits advising Biden not to seem to harsh to poor Sarah. This woman is a heartbeat away from the Presidency and that in of itself is scary, but to treat her differently then Hillary or any other woman is going exactly where the GOP wants so they can cry foul after. If this woman has to be coddled, she should have declined McCain's desperate offer and should resign since she has absolutely no understanding or experience.

I was listening to Fareed Zachariah suggest Palin could not only provide answers to questions, she had no understanding the questions and should drop out as this is way to serious.

Tonight's debate should be carried out as it was when Hillary debated nine men and no one handed her a pass, nor would she have wanted it that way. Biden, bring it on!!!!!!!!!!!

Come on

Can we please grow up. No one needs to be a gentelman to a competitor. Win at all costs.

And can we please get over the myth, that Hillary Clinton did not use her gender as a sheild. Rick Lazio comes to mind. It's a tactic that feminist blogs employ all the time, when the candidate supports their views. And how quickly Republicans hijack these statements shows, how shallow the reasoning really is.

I don't think its that hard, really

I am one of those people who thinks that Obama and Biden should go for the throat and make people see how stupid and/or ridiculous McCain and Palin are during the debates. But after watchinig the last debate, I realized that McCain, who was the bulldog of the night, was actually perceived negatively and Obama was seen as the person who was more likeable and thus the winner.

Lets face it, these debates are for those dummies who really don't know who they are voting for yet (seriously? I guess so.) These are the people who, apparently, base their votes on who they like better.

So really, Biden needs to do what Obama did. Answer the questions, attack a little but not too much and let her speak for herself. (enough rope to hang herself, such as it is) I wouldn't do it that way, but that is what the undecided couch potato voters of thsi country want. So give it to them.

What It's Not, and What It Is

The Biden-Palin dynamic is not about gender. Palin has painted herself as a bitch with lipstick; if Palin doesn't "have a pair," heck, what woman does? She can gut a moose.

It's about smarts, not gender.

If Biden "picks on her" he'll be the smart kid humiliating the class dummy. Palin rides the short bus, and everybody knows it.

Nobody cares anymore that Palin's a "girl." That's she's the village idiot is much more relevant.

How pathetic that all these...

concerns have to come up. It just goes to show what a reckless jerk McHoover is to play these games with the country. Reading about his days in the Navy Academy seems to suggest he has always been a huge jerk. I guess it just shows much more now.

They shouldn't Muzzle Joe

I've seen some pre-debate comments by Palin which tell me that they've forgone attempting to stuff her full of actual facts and are simply filling her with attack lines in order to put Biden in the position of having to respond angrily.

Go the distance or get out of the ring

I truly do appreciate the balance Biden must strike and I wish him well.

Speaking as a woman, I have to say that if Caribou Barbie can't go the distance, she should step out of the ring. She can't boast about skinning moose and growing up with parents who expected her to do "everything the boys did" and then suddenly cry sexism when her incompetence is exposed.

Palin is a female George W. Bush - all style and zero substance.

lots of female stereotypes

Whether we like it or not, Clinton had a reputation as bitch -- the new black! -- and a ballbuster. Emasculating. Overbearing. Manhating. Perhaps lesbian (the ugly icky kind and not the cool sexy kind). A too smart, condescending, Lady Macbeth.

There was no need to worry about coming off as an ass with her, because she would always be a bigger bitch than you were a ass. (Imagine her and Guiliani debating. I mean, who could question that HE could be a big enough ass for that? Yes He Can!)

Sarah Palin is the other kind of woman -- yes, there are two kinds of women, and only two. She is attractive, you see. And fun loving. You know, the kind who is not threatening. Sure, she's spunky, but that's why we like to look at her. She's not actually dangerous. She hunts with us, and we look out for her. We all need to protect her, because she can't really protect herself. She's not a bitch, she's actually desirable.

So, don't push her around, because no one like a man who beats up on (real) women.

**********************

So, what does that leave for Biden? Well, he force her ti make it clear that she's not strong & capable, or that she is a Barracuda. Either one works for him, as long as he realizes which way she is responding, and responds accordingly.

I don't think for a second that she wants to play the victimization card. She WANTS to be tough and capable. She just doesn't realize that she's out of her depth. So, let he should respectfully let her talk.

And then he should say, "Let me actually answer your question, which Gov. Palin clearly doesn't want to do." Dare her to prove to the world that she has substance. Don't belittle her, but use her agressiveness against her.

On the off chance that she goes the hockey mom route, he should point out that this is not about youth hockey, car pools or a bake sale, and that the Vice Presidency needs far more than that. If she tries to stay "adorable," condescend away.
