Tina Fey on "SNL": Umm, wow

We knew Tina Fey looked like Sarah Palin. We didn't realize she could channel her.

The letters thread is now closed.

Damn

I knew Tina Fey was mega-talented, but her ability to capture Sarah Palin's voice and gestures floored me. She and Amy Poehler rocked. Good sketch!

Tina and Amy Rock!

In the 30+ years I've been watching SNL, this was THE BEST opener I've ever seen. Tina did channel Sarah Palin, and Amy was spectacular as Hil as well. What a treat to watch, and so good that we have a priceless parody outlet in SNL (and MAD TV tonight too by the way - priceless skit about McCain and Obama on So You Think You Can Dance!). We have to laugh a bit about all this silliness to keep things in the proper perspective.

I was waiting for it...

God, that was brilliant.

Boy am I sorry I missed SNL last night

I've long been very impressed with Tina Fey, knew she was brilliant, but that, that was sheer genius. Genius.

It's not funny when it's true

Say hello to Presidentress in Waiting Sarah Retard Palin.

Fey/Palin

It has been said that as people age they get the faces they deserve. Tina Fey will still be good-looking in thirty years. The Republicans might chortle over Palin's supposed "hotness" now, but watch out. Look at the cruel planes of her cheeks, the crazed glitter in her eyes, listen to the venom in her words.

In five years she is going to be one scary-looking human. She might pass for an aging cheerleader now, but in five years her true face will be showing: Skullac the Eviscerator.

Fey and Balanced

Wow, Fey did an amazing impersonation. The vocal mannerisms, right on the money, and the look, perfect.

FUNNY GIRLS!

I'm not sure Tina Fey is the funniest woman on the planet, but her Palin impersonation was on the money---one of the best in the history of SNL. The main thing I love about Fey and Amy Poler, however, is that they can lampoon women and the excesses of the women's movement in a truly egalitarian way. I think we can all agree that humor has been painfully absent in this area for a long time.

But what about the next few weeks?

Or four-to-eight years (shudder)? Is Tina going to be re-hired by SNL to do these bits while also doing her own show and projects, or will another cast member be groomed to do the Sarah stuff?

One of the biggest mistakes SNL ever made (and yes, they've done some real doozies over the past 3 decades) was not re-hiring Dana Carvey on an occasional basis to do Bush Sr. - one of the best features that show ever had. Let's not see them repeat history!

Actually

While funny and Tina Fey as Palin a no-brainer, I think Julia Louise Dreyfus (Elaine from Seinfeld) would have fit better.

When you've hit the mark

You've really hit the mark.

Tina Fey took the public persona of Palin

Out into the laughter of the light

From out of the the fathomless dark.

Way to omit Amy Poehler.

ummm embarrassing

Sunday, September 14, 2008 10:43 AM

I thought she was killer...

The voice, in particular, was a great job. Maybe just a tad too Minnesota, but the phrasing was perfect. And the undervoiced "I don't know what that is" when Amy mentioned the Bush doctrine made the bit.

To be honest, I've never been crazy about Amy's Hillary; the voice is wrong, not flat enough, although her phrasing is OK. And this probably isn't Amy's fault, but the hair has never been right. The woman that does Hillary for the Tonight Show (don't know her name) is way better, I think.

Speaking of Amy, I was surprised to find her still a regular cast member; I thought she was going to be in some "Office" spin-off. I was also a bit disappointed that Casey Wilson (who I like a lot) is still a featured, I thought she'd be a full cast member this season. (And I continue to wonder what happened to Maya, who never came back after the strike. Does anyone out there know the story on that?)

All in all, tho, I good first episode. (And is there any mystery why Phelps is such a good swimmer? The guy's built like a fish, for heaven's sake! Did you see his hands? He doesn't have hands and feet, he has flippers!)

I have watched it over and over

WOW, Tina Fey nailed it...the writing was on the mark and the delivery was perfect. I just feel sad because even when in a skit, the Hillary persona tells the truth of who should have been the democratic candidate.

Sunday, September 14, 2008 10:49 AM

omfg

This made my LIFE.

If only Sarah Palin were a fictional Tina Fey sketch character. Then I could laugh, and not feel like shit afterwards.

Thanks Salon for posting this video.

The power was off at my house here in northwest Louisiana last night due to hurricane Ike so I was not able to see it until today.

OUT STANDING!!!

SNL should bring back Tina Fey every week until the election.

Sunday, September 14, 2008 10:53 AM

Meh

Yes, that was a good Palin imitation, but that doesn't make it funny.

In fact, it's scary how unfunny SNL has been for so long - almost 3 decades, I'd say.

Every few years I'll be flipping channels and notice that SNL is on and I think, hey, maybe it's become funny recently. I'm always wrong.

It's very simple comedy for the masses, for people who don't get SCTV or Kid's in the Hall or, oh I dunno, Peep Show.

Sunday, September 14, 2008 11:05 AM

Wow!

The next 6 weeks of SNL are going to be amazing, I can't wait! Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are hysterical as a duo I hope they can come up with more ways for them to do these skits together, though I don't think the Hillary angle will work much longer, she's fairly irrelevant these days.

Sunday, September 14, 2008 11:13 AM

honestly...

When I first tuned into it, I wasn't even totally sure if I was seeing the REAL Sarah Palin or not, Fey was just that good. It was hard to get it into my head for a sec that it was just a skit, maybe I was just too tired & braindead at the time, I don't know...but that voice, that look, that accent, OMG! Tina was DEAD ON & funny as hell. I've since watched it again on Youtube, & after 3+ decades of watching SNL with all its incarnations of various presidents & candidates over the years, I'd have to say that Tina's impersonation was one of the greatest.
