A world where men wear skirts

Could it be on its way?

about frickin' time

Seriously. I'm sick of having my legs encased in those long khaki heat tubes while the missus can let her legs breathe on hot summer days. I won't be a trendsetter on this one, but I'll certainly hop on the bandwagon once the scales tip.

viva the skirt

I'd be wearing one right now if it weren't for the looks I'd get from people. In the heat of the summer, air circulation is a serious matter if you want to be comfortable. Loose shorts are about as close as a man can get without stirring up public discomfort.

"We don't know if America is ready for her men to be traipsing around the streets in skirts."

You can wear a skirt without traipsing in it, just as you can traipse in pants. As traipse means to "walk heavily or with fatigue", perhaps mincing is more what the author meant.

It is not the clothing but how a person carries themselves that people will have the most discomfort with. If the world got over women in pants, the world can get over men in skirts. Easier to accept a change in fashion than in gender roles - effeminate men are another matter entirely. As a man who'd enjoy the comfort of a skirt, I say don't confuse the two issues.

No. Just....NO

It's not gonna happen. Not in the developed Western world, anyway. The idea surfaces every decade or so, gets some ink, then disappears. Most people don't wear "designer" clothes.

Interesting that the question is raised as to whether America is ready for *her* men to be wearing skirts, though.

Scotsmen wearing kilts is the exception that proves the rule, and it's got centuries of proud tradition, significance and development behind it.

- What does a Scotsman wear beneath his kilt? His shoes and socks.

- What's worn under a Scotsman's kilt? Nothing's worn, everything is in perfect working order.

- "My friend, I dunna where ya been, but I see ya won first prize!"

I hope so.

I find a man in a skirt to be quite sexy, really. And I've always felt it's unfair that as a woman I can wear just about anything I want in the way of men's/women's clothes, while men are much more limited by societal norms. I hope this "trend" actually catches on and brings some much-needed sartorial freedom for men.

Skirts, why not?

I see no problem with a guy wearing skirts, as long as he doesn't mind it.

My only request is this: seeing as most guys tend to sit with their legs open, you might want to wear boxer briefs under the skirt, so as to eliminate any risk of innocent grannies and children accidentally seeing your junk. :)

I doubt it

I don’t think most guys know what skirts are really about. It all looks so breezy and care free from a distance but that’s not the reality - the first time his boxers bunch up and he realizes what a VPL is and how delicate areas get chaffed it’s all over (I’m talking about you’re balls and inner thighs, fellows). I mean – can you imagine a guy with a collection of spanks, slips or thongs? And is wearing a skirt really worth it to a guy if he's wearing bike shorts under it anyway?

There was a skirt trend for guy’s right around the Grunge era and it never really caught on. Not even in NYC and San Fran. I don’t see this one catching on either.

It might be on its way, given that men and boys are already wearing...

...jewelry, coloring their hair, and shaping it with gads of product.

On the other hand, gender differentiation is PRECIOUS to people. Culture has got to keep something separate for facile sorting of boys and girls.

In the end, given that we're a herd animal, we'll wear whatever Bob and Sam, or Leah and Sara, are wearing.

Viva la conformity!

Skinny jeans?

What is the hangup with skinny cut jeans or does Ms. Price mean something that I haven't really seen? I wear skinny cut jeans, because they are the only ones that fit - I hate baggy jeans. That said, nothing I own is as tight as the jeans worn by any 16 year old girl. What gives?

i have a dream

that someday men will be able to wear bras. victor's secret.

Re: Skinny jeans?

I have lots of gay friends who wear women’s jeans. Just as tight as they can get them too – like you can’t sit down in them tight. These days more manufactures are catching on and you can now buy them made for men. They are generally very expensive (in excess of $200).

Do you really wear skinny jeans? I have a feeling you wear boot cut – most guys have ditched the baggy in favor of that more classic cut.

Skirts?

I doubt it. But what about busines casual shorts? You see them in the Bahamas and other tropical countries, cops and letter carriers now can wear uniform shorts, why can't I wear khaki shorts to the offie during the summer?

It's not really at the office where I have a problem, it's the $#@&! 1, 2, and 3 trains that are brutal during rush hour!

Kind of old news

This is something that comes up ever once in a while and is a growing trend, but not in the circles that fashion mags cater to. Utilikilts have been growing for a while and there are quite a few men interested in men's skirts.

Part of the issue when things like this come up are that they're women's garments on a man (skirts sit very differently depending on the shape of your hips so it helps to have a skirt designed for straighter hips.) It used to be that I was the only person wearing a kilt when I went out in Boston, now I usually run into someone else if it's a street fair or some other public gathering. Men in unbifurcated garments is happening and a growing trend, but many of the men wearing them tend to be hairy and some overweight. I started wearing skirts/kilts whatever, years ago but have gone more full-time with them since I've gotten back in shape and can't find pants that fit comfortably around my legs without being too bagy.
