A new take on the octopussy

A French AIDS-prevention ad campaign makes us never want to go swimming again.

The letters thread is now closed.

what's up with that?

I think the underwater penis-world is clever.

I don't really get the "female gentials in space" one.

Why are the vulva on orbs?

Why aren't there more, erm, cave-like structures to explore? (This looks more like a landscape of malformed dippin' dots!)

And what's up with the brown-and-white-piebald vulva-orb? (Do women really come in that color pattern? Or is that a reference to barnyard animal love?)

Um...ok?

That is so wrong in so many ways.....

Where can get Svutlana copy of ad for bedroom wall?

Interest for compare male and female ad. Female have hand up like surprise and little bit scare for see so many penis in one place as if she be Little Mermaid on Disney 20,000 League Under Sea ride that go terrible bad. Male look like Asstro, intrepid oriface explorer on happy happy collision course with thousand breast.

Wonder Svutlana why is there giant penis in female ad that is wrap around Little Mermaid, but no giant vulva ready for swallow up Asstro.

For such a brief article

There are a lot of trolls posting in the thread.

Something I've noticed a lot lately on Salon...it's like a troll explosion around here. Did someone pour some water on these things?

the penises are cute!

But the girl parts look kind of unappealling...is this just because I'm a straight female, or was there some kind of misogyny at play here?

Just kidding. These are really cool ads. Thanks for sharing.

Penis Jokes

Never tell your partner after having sex that you felt like you were floating in outer space. It leaves the image of the astronaught who breaks his safety line while on a space walk. If gravity does not bring him to earth he may never touch land again.

A forest of diseased private parts

The only thing that disturbed me were the giant red starfish clinging to the male genitalia. Looked like some kind of disease or parasite to me. And painful to boot. At anyrate, not a wonder sea-scene, but a forest of diseased private parts.

on the female body parts

I think there is something sort of odd about the "girl parts" because they are too decontextualized. A penis is a very defined object, one can easily imagine it "detached" from a body. A Vagina/Vulva on the other hand is more ambiguous. Where does it start? The first fold? A few inches around the first fold? Add to this the fact that a large portion of the organ exists inside the body, so in order to recreate the whole thing you have to sort of create something around it.

I think the physicality of the objects coming into play have a lot to do with this. it's the same reason those molds of certain pornstar's vagina and anus areas are just sort of creepy to a lot of people, where as a dildo is not.

While I applaud any sex positive and "pro exploration" message regarding safe sex, it would be nice to consider that sexual exploration can go hand in hand with exploring each other as people too.

Giving AIDS and discomfort to the enema!

"A penis is a very defined object, one can easily imagine it 'detached' from a body. A Vagina/Vulva on the other hand is more ambiguous."

Actually, the penis is a vagina that protrudes outside the body. We're all born female. The NOVA show on birth shows how it happens. So...measure the vagina the same way, ovaries being testicles, etc.

I believe Duesberg et alia. That is, while condoms might prevent STDs, HIV doesn't cause AIDS. HIV is just the body's indicator that it has been in contact with something toxic.

The traditional treatment for HIV was/is the use of strong carcinogens like AZT that kill healthy cells, too. It's like "bleeding" in that it weakens already weakened people. Magic Johnson, on the other hand, refused such treatment, changed his lifestyle, and is healthy now.

There's a lesson there.

The "cure" for AIDS was a big part of why those with only HIV died. Just like people with syphilis didn't "go crazy." It was the mercury-based treatment that caused the dementia.

Duesberg believes that the gay lifestyle, not gay sex acts themselves, caused the problem. Is he right? After all, the porn industry is FILLED with heterosexual having unprotected anal sex and few, if any, have contracted HIV, much less AIDS. Not all gays get HIV/AIDS, either. In fact, almost all who DO have used IV drugs.

The first AIDS case involved a Canadian airline steward who claimed some 2500 partners. Think about that: If you party all the time, have random sex often, don't complete courses of antibiotics before engaging in sex again, use "poppers" and IV drugs, don't get enough sleep and eat poorly...you make yourself a walking target for opportunistic disease. Then when you get HIV, you panic and undergo treatments that would put Mike Tyson on his butt.

Unfortunately, the gay community opted to play politics instead of heeding science. Ergo, it decimated its own community.

There is no "heterosexual" epidemic. Period. Never was, never will be. The whole "We're all at risk" is a lie to gain political traction. Are we "all" equally at risk at being killed by drunk drivers? No. Not if we don't drink and drive, not if we tell others to do the same others, not if we refuse to be their passengers, and drive defensively ourselves.

When advocates cry "pandemic" they go back 25 years and consider the whole world. Yet more Americans have died from diabetes in the same period.

Activists also say it's not a "gay" disease because straight Africans die from AIDS, too. That's only because the gay community lobbied to get the AIDS definition stretched to fit traditional wasting diseases in Africa. a place notorious for malaria, intra-continental war deaths, and widespread lack of potable water. Africa is filled with sick people. If you tell their governments that they can get help from America and Big Pharma, can get billions of dollars in aid by claiming AIDS, Presto! You get an epidemic as ordered.

Meanwhile gays who use IV drugs and have lots of unprotected sex, "over-do" things while failing to care for themselves, continue to get sick and die.

I understand that being gay often entails a lot of abuse from other in many cultures. I "get" how difficult it is to take care of yourself when so many others say they hate you. Excess and drugs numbs the pain, like all addictions (self-cutting, anorexia, alcoholism, etc.) But even AA says it's better to smoke and drink coffee than succumb to alcohol. Maybe it's time for gays to do the same and admit certain behaviors causes AIDS and so stop that behavior...at least IV drugs, amyl nitrate, etc.

I've read Fauci et alia. You should, too. However, I suggest you balance them by reading Duesberg, Lauritsen, and other AIDS skeptics. Lives may depend on it.
