At first I thought "she's just a little green" but at the end I felt this was a college production. Definitely not ready for the Daily Show. Sorry, I love your column, though.
Every woman you know wishes Haskins would get hired by that boys-club, the Daily Show?
Every woman I know wants Haskins to get her own show.
Hmph. And you call yourself a feminist.
I watched both the Bridezilla and Yogurt Target: Women videos. Marketing to women is so broad and overly-sweeping (women love yogurt! women are craaaazy!) while simultaneously narrowly stereotypical (we all want to get married! gabbing with friends at a wedding is empowering!) makes Target: Women a welcome treat.
I agree she would be perfect for The Daily Show. Samantha Bee needs some female company over there too.
I didn't think "Borat" was as funny as everyone else did, because the targets of the jokes - homophobic, the old/rich, Repubs - were too easy to hit. I would have been much funnier (albeit un-P.C.) to see Cohen lampoon, say an effeminate gay man who's secretly, deeply misogynist (and trust me, they're out there!)
In a similar vein, Sarah is picking off easy one in satiring Bridezillas, that annoying Yoplait commercial, etc. What's next? The easiest targets of all, like "My Super Sweet 16" or "The Real Housewives of Orange County"?
Come on...she's got the potential for to go for great, thorny satire. How about "Starting Over"? Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty? The Michigan Womyn's Festival? Geraldine Ferraro, and the feminist who called Obama an "inadequate black male"?
**************
Satire only becomes worthy of praise when you're willing to go after everyone...even your target audience(s). That's what makes, say, "The Simpsons" timeless.
Did anyone see Kristen Schaal's critique of misogyny in the coverage of the Clinton campaign last night?
"Those are just Freedom Drops."
Also, the Wonder Woman costume was pretty golden.
Thanks.
I went to undergrad with Sarah - she was one of the funniest people in our school's actually funny "Immediate Gratification Players" improv troupe. When I saw the yogurt thing a week ago I very pleasantly surprised - I'm always happy when cool things happen to cool people. I recommend keeping an eye out for other IGP folks, like Justin Krebs who, last I knew was doing some kind of New York-based theatrical thing.
I love her bits on The Current! I don't really want her to go onto the Daily Show, I just want her to make more content of her own. Glad to see her featured here.
Yes, I think she's fabulous, and I'd love to see her make it to mainstream TV exactly as she is. The endless bride shows are the best argument I've ever seen for banning ALL marriage, regardless of the genders of the participants. But am I the only one to spot the irony that the discussion of her yogurt spot focused almost entirely on which brand of yogurt is the yummiest?
Isn't that the kind of humor you Broadsheeters tend to enjoy?
Let's find someone struggling with addiction or mental illness and give ourselves a little joy at their expense. Whooppee!
Isn't she in Second City? She's mentioned as their "First Harvard Graduate" here: http://www.secondcity.com/?id=theatres/chicago/features
She's great!!! TDS would be lucky to get her. I love the show but it definitely needs more (feminist) women.
And thanks for tip! I'll watch out for more of Sarah.
thanks for the heads-up. I thought it was funny, and I'll keep my eye out for new ones.
hmmmmm... am I alone here?
The yogurt spot... the line about "I have a master's but then I got married!" was a little bit too close to commenting that "those older women have really let themselves go!"
I actually thought the Activia spot, using a very attractive older actress, was more feminist than the piece making fun of it. I mean, heck, those cultures and that calcium actually *are* good for women. Even younger women.
As for the spot on bridal shows... the point I took away was that Sarah Haskins *agrees* with the bridal shows that women who want to get married are shallow and stupid, because of course remaining single is the only empowered line of action. She agrees with the harpy bride vs single woman duality, just comes down on the pro-single side. I'm waiting for images of thoughtful brides making an important spiritual commitment, honoring their own traditions. But I don't think Sarah Haskisn knows anything about that.
You know, those older married women, they've just let themselves go anyway.
Sense of humor: you're doing it wrong.
The fake reporters of the Daily Show (like Samantha Bee) have to have a fake persona - that of an incompetent, idiotic blowhard. There's only room for one smart, cynical personality on that show - John Stewart. It would be a shame to see Sarah Haskins adopt a fake persona to make jokes she's already making quite well.
There's no reason to be catty.
Not everything that is supposed to be funny, is.
Younger women making fun of older women for letting themselves go is not funny, no matter what is intended.
You know those women over 35, though. First they let themselves go, then they lose their sense of humor when younger women bitch at them in the name of feminism.
Have fun as a robot.
