Spain's equality minister says Silvio Berlusconi is a chauvinist who needs psychiatric help.

The letters thread is now closed.

Berlusconi needs psychiatric help...

...in the way that a desert needs rain.

There isn't a ladder tall enough in the world to allow Berlusconi to get over himself.

Ahhhh, those macho Italianos....

In a land where women still get catcalled while walking on a city sidewalk, Berlusconi makes perfect sense as a leader. This dirty ol' man - for better or for worse - is the Hugh Hefner of global politics.

(Which makes me wonder - do his uncommonly attractive female cabinet members have a calendar coming out? Oy.)

Italians definition of feminism...

Is to hire a bunch of pretty women to flirt with?

I can imagine they don't take them seriously...along with the entire female existence.

How could they do that...it's just maddening. If it's all just pretty women...are they intelligent? Do they do their jobs? Or are they just there to simply be gandered at?

I'll never understand men...petty, old perverted Italian men.

We weren't that bad

On behalf of all former high school yearbook editors, I'm officially insulted to be compared to the Italian Parliament.

That's RIGHT!

Never mind that the man has an opinion that does not swuare with radical feminism, he must be deranged and, thus, strapped down to a chair and brainwashed.

I do not hear the same calls to brainwash or psychiatrically alter women who badmouth men.

Maybe it is time to turn the tables and begin such a conversation.

Speaking of Therapy

After the last few threads, I have to wonder, are we off our meds today?

I'm sorry, but his note is effing hilarious

But i still love Spanish Defense Minister Carme Chacon, on whom I have a girl crush.

Culture shock

As the good-humoured response from the women M.P.s suggests, Berlusconi's comments may not be that out of the ordinary in the context of Italian culture, where flirtatiously complimenting a woman's appearance is seen as charming rather than a declaration of war upon female dignity. Perhaps Broadsheet reporters need to travel more.

From a Spanish guy

Well, everybody here is American but I am a Spanish guy and I live in Spain (and I am very politically aware) so I know this topic very well. Of course, I am writting here from Spain.

Anyway, Spain is the paradise of feminism. I think it would be a great idea to issue a special green card for the Broadsheet readers. You will be here in heaven (except for the relationship part because Spanish guys don't like women like you).

For example, last week the Supreme Court approved the Law of Domestic Violence. According to this law, if a man kills a woman receives more penalty than if a woman kills a man. If a man beats a woman receives more penalty than if a woman beats a man. Domestic violence is defined as a man aggressing a woman. So lesbian couples (gay marriage is legal here) and men being beaten by women are not considered domestic violence. Women abusing physically their children is not domestic violence (all statistics show, in Spain and America that more women abuse their children than men).

What is this thing about "all Spanish people is equal, regardless their sex, religion, race, etc" that the Spanish constitution says? So bad for the constitution. We are not equal. If we have the wrong sexual organs, we receive more punishment for the same crime.

After all, feminism is about EKWALEETEEE, isn't it? Of course not. It is about women retaining their privileges (like child custody and alimony), gaining new privileges (like receiving less penalty for the same crime) while playing the role of victims to advance their agendas and evade responsibilities.

I can't end this post without mentioning Bibiana Aido and other female ministers. Firstly, let me tell you that I have not problem with female politicians, if they are competent. The mayor of my town is a woman (and I voted for her). The president of my region (something like a US governor) is a woman (and I voted for her). Both of them are competent, have a good resume and I think they are doing a great job. I plan to vote again for both of them in the next elections.

Bibiana Aido is other kind of female politician. The result of what in US is called "affirmative action", which some incompetent women use to get positions they would have not achieved otherwise. The resume of Bibiana Aido is laughable. She wouldn't have been minister if she were a man. But our Prime Minister Zapatero is very aware of public gestures like that. Of course, nobody in Spain opposed the appointment of a female minister (opposing that is laughable). But some people like me, oppose appointing a mediocre person as a minister only because she has the right kind of gonads.

OH YEAH...I WANT TO LIVE THERE

And what exactly does Italy do these days?

"Maybe it is time to turn the tables and begin such a conversation."@ brightstar

I want you to Q & A me...

In all seriousness...I need therapy.

I want reasons and a new view on men. I want to really reconsider my sexist ways.

And coming from you....someone completely opposite of me...may help.

OK, I'm all for equality but...

appointing a pregnant woman as Defense Minister just seems like a, well, dumb thing to do.
