Introducing the SkirtChaser race, where women run and men pursue them.
The letters thread is now closed.
  • They're chasing the skirts, not the women

The term "skirt-chaser" is archaic enough to be funnny now (FYI, it's a old term for what we might now call a *&%$hound, which actually makes "skirt chaser" seem clever and cute in comparison) and the race is about men trying to keep up with women, not drag them off by their ponytails. I actually have several of the skirts and love running in them--ironically, I like them because they are much less revealing than most running shorts, and cooler as well.

  • Pseudo feminist power over men?

So feminism vows to ERADICATE this power women have over men?

    Or just ignore it?

So far I only see the latter, coddled in faux ignorance or denial that the playing field is not level after all.

  • So then, this should NEVER be promoted?

there is still enough violence against women and harrassment of women that we shouldn't be promoting it as an advertising gimmick.

Maybe ALL men should forever walk on eggshells because some woman somewhere was harassed or abused by some man?

Does this work the other way around? Since there are still way too many women abusing men, should all women be forced to be sober and serious in the company of men?

Maybe we all ought to weep daily, while walking the path of the cross of Jesus's death and lashing ourselves with leather whips, all because some woman somewhere took a liking, NOT to the nice fine KIND boy, but to the scumbag bastard detritus next door who made her heart race, the son of the woman who ALSO chose to bed said scumbag's dad?

i do not get this industry, one of feeding the maw of need by women. Women need bad boys and bad men to do the dirty work. So naturally some segment of women is primed to CHOOSE these sort of scummies OVER better men.

THEN the next generation of men ALL HAVE TO WALK ON EGGSHELLS because GOD FORBID some man somewhere has some genune affection for women and wants to be MORE THAN SAD.

  • They are not really skirts

They are tight shorts underneath wrapped with an outer layer that resembles a skirt.

Anyway, more and more men are adopting them themselves for running.

the race is about men trying to keep up with women ...

    Good catch.

Looks like you've won this one. Congratulations.

  • @tehmorp

I don't know about the opinions, but I'd say your metaphor is poor at best. "Don't shoot unless you're trying to kill" would seem, to be, to be a damn good policy, since there's no guarantee you won't hit a vital organ.

As for the skirts thing...men like to look at women. I'm sorry that bothers you, and I'm sure glad women are completely immune to that sort of thing.

(I'm sick of explaining this, but this is my mother's account. I'm a guy.)

  • Correction: "...seem, to ME, to be..."

    ah, typos.

  • Would TC-F still be offended/outraged if the opposite was also done?

There could be a "Tush Chasers" race, where athletic guys with what girls would call 'nice buns' run ahead in shorts, and the girls chase them instead....

All in all, this sounds pretty harmless. Then again, I'm one of those Winter Belt blokes who yearns for spring/summer, when local women shed the parkas, etc. and start wearing swishy skirts, cotton dresses etc. etc. Ahhhh, the beauty!

Don't know exactly how sick 'n' twisted that makes me...but hey, at least I ain't no humorless feminist.

  • Kufir77's wonderful comment....

pretty much says it all, doesn't it?

Ha Ha Ha! Women being chased down and raped by criminals is sooooooooooooooo funny!

Okay, seriously---you guys get on here and complain about "outrage" and "resentment". Never mind that a feminist blog might, you know, actually be about feminist issues or something (hint: the blog is not here for the bitter guys who get on here to complain about a feminist blog daring to address women's issues).

Has it ever occured to anyone that any attempt to discuss or analyze something is not "outrage", much less "manufactured" or "false" outrage? That it isn't "resentment"?

We're just trying to discuss whether or not this concept is as cute and funny as the advertisers seem to think, what messages such a campaign sends, and what it says about the culture.

Nobody's talking about banning something. Good grief.

I'm saying--and I suspect others are saying--that this race, or rather, the concept being used to peddle it, is in poor taste because it validates attitudes like Kufir77's. Thinking that "women being chased down by prison convicts" is funny is sort of like thinking that lynching black people is funny--and people do makes jokes about that. However, making jokes about lynching, playfully hanging nooses in your office and so on, tends to get you labeled as a racist--quite rightly.

But to say the concept behind this event may be poorly thought out and offensive calls out all the trolls who immediately press all the panic buttons---OHHHHHH these nasty women don't want us to have ANY fun......!!!!!!!

Although what people like Walter Map and Brightstar are doing hanging out on a feminist blog and screaming on literally EVERY thread goes unaddressed.....is this their idea of fun? And if so, in what way are they not run of the mill sexists?

This is a feminist blog. The writers do not have to defend their premise or choice of topic to anybody. Okay? I disagree with all of the writers from time to time and I also write in about it. But the trolls are contributing nothing to the discussion but their unabashed bigotry.

Kufir's joke brings out the true colors of the trolls.

Now go ahead, tut-tut and tsk-tsk about how Tina has no sense of humor because she doesn't think rape jokes are funny. Go ahead. I dare you.

There could be a "Tush Chasers" race, where athletic guys with what girls would call 'nice buns' run ahead in shorts, and the girls chase them instead...

I saw that in an old movie once. Except the guys wore suits and weren't much to look at. They did have guitars, though, probably to ward off the marauders.

I'm one of those Winter Belt blokes who yearns for spring/summer, when local women shed the parkas, etc. and start wearing swishy skirts, cotton dresses etc. etc. Ahhhh, the beauty!

Around here that kind 'o talk'll get you maced if you're not careful. Lower your eyes and mumble. Back away slowly. Don't make any sudden moves.
