men and silicon
I hear men say that they prefer natural vs fake boobs, but I have yet to meet a man who rejects a woman when he finds out she is fake. And I know a number of women with fake tatas (for cosmetic reasons). None of them are alone for long.
As long as men will notice women with big tatas over those with more, uhm, modest "lady lumps", women will stuff their bras, and get implants sewn in there.
Oh - and I LOVE the distinction made between tats and implants! So true.

What's the problem?
Independent, empowered women who are in control of their sexuality decide to engage in body modification.
Beautiful. In control. Fabulous.
You go, girl!!!

wow don't let that one go.
Bring her home to mom. "So how did you two meet?"
"Well I was on the pole airing it out for a free boob job and your son was licking $5 bills and sticking them on my ass. Can you pass that chicken salad?"

To Catherine Price
Your idea of liposuction being the give away prize would have been less appalling, but still extremely appalling (yes, I know you were being satirical).
Liposuction is cheaper and considerably more safer, and you don't have to worry about carcinogenic material leaking inside your body years later.
Personally I think most of the women I know and see would do themselves better entering contests for dental care, but I would hope their dental issues would be addressed through Universal Health Care.
Imagine if the event had offered treatment for breast cancer.
Imagine a future where most of us have no choice but to enter ridiculous contests in order to acquire quality health care.

did a segment where you could get scratch off lotto tickets for medical procedures last week. pretty scary, but not that far off.
as far as tats v. silly cone-- all the articles seem to quote women as doing it for their "self esteem" instead of "for men," I guess. you never see that people get tats to raise their self esteem, more like, "that dragon, skull, unicorn, whatever, was fuckin' rad!" More like permanent jewelry that expresses who they already are inside, not something surgically implanted to augment the self.

"Self esteem"
If you can buy it, it isn't self esteem.
What I want to know is, will the surgeries be televised as well?

The impending apocolypse
Here is the thing that creeps me out most about boob-jobs. They don't look like boobs. Most other forms of plastic surgery yield body parts that, when done correctly, look normal. When you get a nose job, you walk out with something that looks like a nose (unless you are Michael Jackson). When you get a face lift, the goal is to attain a more youthful (natural) appearance. Boob jobs would creep me out less if the goal was to attain the appearance of more youthful or even bigger but normal-looking breasts. But, the goal of a boob job appears to be to have things stuck to your chest whose shape does not EVER occur in nature.
The fact that a small number of women are willing to debase themselves to get tupperware bowls stuck to their sternum is sad. The fact that a small number of men want to watch, also sad. But, don't forget people have turned out in droves to watch public hangings/beheadings, people be fed to the lions, bear-bating, dog and cock fighting etc.

no word
No word on if the club will pay for the replacements the winner will need in about 10 years, or her medical expenses should one of the implants rupture or be rejected?

How I learned to stop worrying and love the boob job...
...actually, I haven't. I hate it. It doesn't help that some of the smartest women I know deep down just want to be the hottest girl in the room.
I feel sorry for the women out there who have their priorities straight. I'm sure it's easy to feel marginalized.
As for women's freedom to make their own choices regarding their sexuality, I would never argue otherwise. But I think the prevalence of boob jobs is just one of many data points suggesting that too many women are incredibly poor stewards of their sexuality, just like the presence of Cadillac Escalades in poor urban neighborhoods suggests that too many low-income families are poor stewards of their financial resources.
Hardly anyone in America gets fake tits for arbitrary reasons related to a personal aesthetic. Otherwise you would expect see just as many utterly random body modifications.

@ MTE
"Why don't people assume that tattoos suggest someone is unhappy with their skin, and assume implants suggest someone wants to reimagine their body structure?"
I understand your point and I think there's exceptions to every rule, of course. For example, I don't think anyone would fault a woman for getting a post-mastectomy implant. There's also plenty of people that get tattoos and what not because they don't like their skins or whatever.
I think the big difference comes down to the fact that a boob job is major surgery, which has all the associated risks of infection, anesthesia complications, and things like that. Most surgeons would probably tell you that the risks are small, but they're still way out of proportion to those associated with getting a tattoo or a piercing. As some of the other poster have alluded to, some of these women that are winning these surgeries in contests might either be completely underestimating the things that can go wrong, or are so desperate for "improvement" that they don't care what the risks are.

statistics?
What are the statistics on lesbians getting boob jobs? Same percentage as straight women?
There are women who do live celebate lives for a variety of reasons - do any of these women get boob jobs for esteem reasons?
Can you really try as say that women get boob jobs because they just consider it a body modification thing like hair style and colour, tatoos, tanning? I don't think so.
Women get boob jobs because men notice boobs - especially the bigger variety. It is as simple as that.
And when women get a boob job, they are basically saying that they buy into the image that is set by porn, advertising and the lad/ladette mags. They are willing to modify themselves to conform to a breast image that men are increasingly thinking is "normal"
Forget the "self esteem" "want to balance out myself" "my breasts didn't develop" "want to be able to buy those cute clothes" crap excuses. Women who get vanity boobs are doing it for male sexual attention. (Of course, you could say the increased attention does increase the barbie's self esteem!)
