  • Reality bites, don't it

Husbands are like fires - they go out if unattended.

    Zsa Zsa Gabor

  • @Parson Jim

Seriously. If the best defense you've got for Eliot Spitzer is Zsa Zsa Gabor .... nuff said.

Reality does bite. One can be the *perfect* spouse: warm, loving, sexually generous, emotionally supportive, financially responsible, a great parent, and helpful with the household chores .... and still find out via press conference that your spouse is a cheat and a liar.

You of all people, who constantly tell us how ill-used men our by selfish wives, should not be throwing stones.

Speak for yourself. If you're a dog, fine, but don't speak for me, because I'm not and neither are my friends. I know the opinions you state about men agree with those of Sex in the City, but not of anyone or anything else. In the meantime, you and whoever gave your silly screed a star might want to ponder why you have such a low opinion of yourself and of men generally.

  • @Juliebird

Yeah, and a woman can be a cold, sexless, emotionally abusive harpy who neglects her children and her husband, and a man is still going to be vilified for trying to get some happiness out of life if he strays from his marriage.

If she gets a divorce, she still is overwhelmingly favored in any custody dispute, hence will likely receive the marital home and child support to a degree far more likely than her husband could expect from Family Court.

Meanwhile, if his wife strays, he is blamed for being neglectful and abusive because she is obviously unhappy. The femninist entitlement mentality will still argue for her getting the house, etc. in the event of a divorce. As we've seen from Newsweek and countless pop-psych books, she will be "empowered" by her experience without the stigma of any moral judgement.

Feminists have been crowing about how oppressive marriage is - that being said, why are the same feminists decrying Spitzer's actions, which are entirely consistent with feminist ideology.

Who knows why he did what he did. Maybe he just got tired of a sexless, emotionally abusive woman whom he is tied to through the injustices of the Family Court. Maybe he just got bored. Maybe he is amoral and hates traditional marriage, like many feminists. Who knows?

Either way, it's none of your business, Juliebird.

  • great post, Laurel!

It is clear that these people spew vitriol because there is a profitable career in doing so, etc.

All this talk about 'pleasing your man' reminds me of a quote I saw in an unlikely place. The quote, "Feed them, f**k them and flatter them!" referred to keeping a husband happy. A cheerful motto that, naturally should apply to one spouse or the other, according to their various talents and has nothing to do with the Spitzer situation.

The speaker, according to her bio, was Julia Child who, by all accounts, had a long and happy marriage to someone who was very supportive of her career.

I think it is general knowledge that Doc Laura is no Doc at all, so bear that in mind, folks. It is SO like her to attempt to capitalize on someone else'e misfortune and suffering to desperately grab at the currency of a few headlines.

Silda must be enduring the torments of the damned right now; did you look at the expression on her face during the Gov's canned little speeches ? Being humiliated privately from a spouses'infidelity is quite bad enough; being dragged through the cheater mud so publicly AND being expected to be "stand-up" about it, is a whole other critter. Then to have some half-baked coo-coo like "Dr" Laura weigh in and point fingers is beyond preposterous and more than anyone should have to bear.My hat is off to Silda for standing tall under what must be a back-breaking load. I can only imagine what her children are going through, another layer of heartache for her. Having been on the receiving end of bitterest infidelity, I can only speculate how much more unbearable it would be to have all those cameras flashing, all those armchair quarterbacks second-guessing every nuance of your most personal life.

As for the whole misogynist women thing, I am at a loss to grasp it. Our culture is one wherein pills are manufactured the the tune of billions a year to give older men ( and those who actually have ED) erections, but women in the same age cohort suffering with menopause get...what ..??? fodder for marginalizing jokes and meds that significantly increase her odds of getting cancer or having a stroke ? Is it me ??!? To see even one woman utilizing the media for her chance at five minutes of fame on the back of misogny is deeply disturbing and reprehensible. You can bet your Guccis that had the infidelity been Silda's, no Dr Laura ( or anyone else of note) would've come to her defense; she'd have been crucified in the media as a whore and that would've been the end of that.

This is not the point at which "I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar" cues up. I don't burn bras or hate men or any of the rest of that stereotypical hogwash. I also don't believe women should have more advantage or opportunity in the workplace, in government and society, etc.; just the SAME opportunity and advantage that those with testicles enjoy. I do believe, however, that women have enough gradient to work against that they should support and encourage each other as fully as possible, whenever possible. Perhaps enough people will recognize Dr Laura et al for what they truly are and she/they will fade from the public eye, and good riddance to nasty ole' rubbish.

Meanwhile, women of true substance have your back, Silda. Keep your chin up. As a PS, the media keeps referring to the call girl in question as the one who "took down a Governor"; not true at all; his own foolish, puerile, self-centered choices and salacious weakness did that. Interesting that a male-driven profession ( they keep telling us the oldest in the world, by no accident) should suddenly be designated as the root of all evil.

God, I thought we had outgrown this madness by now.
