if they were interested in reducing the number of abortions they would hand out free birth control and sterilization to anyone who wanted it
so whatever they ARE interested in, reducing the number of abortions is NOT it.

Pre-natal testing
I understand the distinction..those who have pre-natal testing vs. those who do not. However, I've always found it hard to believe that people who wish to ban abortion also consistently refuse pre-natal testing. Somehow, I always thought those two groups over-lapped, somewhere, and that, in the end, some women who swore that other women shouldn't have abortions wound up having them when they saw the results. However, that is simply my opinion.
This bill doesn't sound like a horrible idea, if it ends up the way it is now.
-
nobody is going to track the political opinions of pregnant women who get prenatal tests
but since every isolated abortion clinic in a red state has had the experience of having protesters one day come in to get an abortion another it seems very likely that many pro-lifers who don't want a defective baby do the same. Abortion conflicts have nothing to do with babies, banning abortion is ONLY about controlling peoples sexual behavior.
-
And when supply far outstrips demand?
Then what? It sounds great on paper because you imagine there are 30 million couples dying to adopt a seriously disabled infant. But there might not be. So we then, what? Warehouse them? Sounds sort of humane, I guess. If you're a veal.
-
why?
"I've always found it hard to believe that people who wish to ban abortion also consistently refuse pre-natal testing."
Many pro-lifers are decidedly religious.
Therefore, they want to leave things "in God's hands." Prenatal testing would allow mortals to "play God", plus "science" can't compare to Faith, so who says these prenatal tests are accurate? Doctors can be wrong, and miracles can happen if you just accept Jesus into your heart ...
(Thus sayeth the Believer who is anti-abortion and anti-prenatal testing. Of which I am neither.)
-
Oh yeah, that's why
I myself am not sure how long I could stand to look Brownback in the eye.
One could hardly ask for a more concise way of stating why it is that we have politicians.

iron-clad contract?
So what happens when a woman delivers the disabled baby and the adoptive family changes their mind? Who is responsible for the kid now?
-
It's called EUGENICS
The Nazi's were very big fans of it. So was Margaret Sanger. It keeps the gene pool "clean".
-
Strange Bedfellows agree
As the parent of a daughter who was diagnosed with a prenatal genetic disorder, I thank God for some rational approach to this problem. Hearing that my daughter would probably die at birth was the worst day of my life. Continuing the pregnancy was a very difficult decision and although I am opposed to abortion, I could not judge anyone who had made a different decision. Much more support is needed for any woman who faces a tough decision like this. We should spend more time on prevention of abortion rather than trying to outlaw abortion. By the way, our daughter turned 18 Saturday and takes algebra, social studies and English at our local high school.

I like the registry idea
If, as noted above, all parties stick to the contract.
In fact, why not open it up to all anti-abortionists? If they're so gung-ho about preserving every last precious life, how about they all agree to take in an unwanted child? Only after they've signed up would they be allowed to scream at women outside family-planning clinics.

Never mind that!
A woman sat on a toilet seat for TWO YEARS!

The boyfriend must have been one of those newly minted soft lefty males who was too passive to attempt to change her mind about the situation...

What makes you think leftist males are "soft"? Because we respect women? Or because unlike you, we don't hate them?

Actually
Rosemary Kennedy was NOT mentally disabled from birth. The Kennedys had her lobotomized to keep her from "getting in trouble"...upon hitting puberty she had started getting in trouble at her convent. Doctors told the family that the lobotomy would be an effective way to corral her "mood swings" and make her more manageable. Here is a delightful first-hand description of the procedure:
" We went through the top of the head, I think she was awake. She had a mild tranquilizer. I made a surgical incision in the brain through the skull. It was near the front. It was on both sides. We just made a small incision, no more than an inch." The instrument Dr. Watts used looked like a butter knife. He swung it up and down to cut brain tissue. "We put an instrument inside," he said. As Dr. Watts cut, Dr. Freeman put questions to Rosemary. For example, he asked her to recite the Lord's Prayer or sing "God Bless America" or count backwards. ... "We made an estimate on how far to cut based on how she responded." ... When she began to become incoherent, they stopped."
—James W. Watts
The procedure's effects were more severe than they anticipated and Rosemary was confined to a wheelchair for the rest of her life. The story circulated to the public was that her disability was a congenital condition--not surprising, given the truth of what happened.

I think all antiabortionists need to be required to be on that registry
Before they are allowed to scream at women entering abortion clinics. The registration process can be carried out in front of the clinic - any protester who refuses to register, or who can't show a registration card showing he's already registered, will be told to go away.
Somehow, I think that this will cut down the numbers of wackos who terrorize patients to about zero.

A link for you
I've always thought that this chart should be internet meme type legendary. Because it makes it all so clear.

Reductio ad Hitlerum
Kufir loses.
Eugenics gets a bad rep for a few reasons: 1. Coercion. Enticement is one thing, but coercion is another. 2. Mistakes. Many eugenicists became convinced that *everything* was hereditary. 3. The association with racism. In fact, there were prominent leaders of many ethnic groups who believed eugenics might be good for them. This bad rep has had serious consequences for efforts at population control and, indeed, on the betterment of humanity.
Besides, doesn't Brownback believe that the souls of the aborted go to some perfect, eternal place, where presumably no one is retarded? What's his problem with abortion?
