When Hillary attacks!

  • Talk about condescending!

This is a perfect example of how Obama attacks and doesn't get blamed for doing so. Very passive-aggressive. He treats her like she is (1) an inappropriate, bitchy underdog (while maintaining the coveted underdog image himself);(2) somehow unfair; (3) bitter and unsuccessful. And portrays himself as "above the fray" when in fact this is a very direct attack on her personality. Now we know what a neurotic, bad mommy she is.

He has been extremely successful at this game. In no way has he actually been above the fray, but he has been subtle about his attacks, as in this one, and has had the media, large numbers of his supporters, and lots of Republicans to do the attacking - often brutal, personal and terribly unfair - for him, including misrepresenting many of the things the Clintons haves said. Even Jesse Jackson disagreed with the press and Obama about Clinton's 1988 primaries votes - and he supports Obama.

If Obama gets the nomination, I'll vote for him in the general, but I hope I'll be able to forget how underhandedly he manipulated his supporters and the media to get there.

    Yawn...

Last I looked, 22 years old is indeed an ADULT. Was Bill an idiot on this? Yep, sure was. Was there a sexual harassment suit? No. Misogynist or sexist (as pertains to our conversation)? Not unless you want to condemn 95% of most men who are not gay.

And the last I looked this was over 10 years ago. And yeah, the right will probably make what ever hay they can of it. But, been there, done that. Nothing new.

  • What is with the Salon editorial staff????

If Salon wants its pro-Hillary readers and its pro-Obama readers to clean up their comments and quit slinging bile at each other, why the @#$%^!! did it pick a skimpy nonentity like this as the "quote of the day" and invite readers to comment????? What exactly did the editors think the readers were going to say????

  • HYPOCRITE

Obama has been attacking Clinton for the last two months; first over the South Carolina flap, which wasn't even a flap, but nonetheless was enough for them to slap on their self-righteous indignation chips-on-the-shoulder, playing straight to character, I might add. Then it's all these veiled references, allowing the cult-like Obama-ites to do the dirty work for him, to the Clintons in general. Then it's their references in the Obama Stump Stew of Platitudes that anyone who dares asks where his original ideas for solutions, and where's his resume, that all of those people are cynics, naysayers, and pessimists. A page straight out of the Rove/Bush handbook.

Looks to me like McCain isn't the only one looking to continue the Bush way. Speaking of Bush, these two bear an uncannily resememblance: Neither one was scrutinized the media; both are/were resume-lite; both called themselves uniters; both referred to the government as a bureaucracy to be managed; and both were up to their butts beholden to the energy companies that were ripping us off - Bush with oil, Obama with nuclear power. And in keeping with Bush-lite, Obama will need a grown-up as Vice President, and learning curve.

For a uniter, this guy sure knows how to divide. If he is the nominee, as a Democrat I will not vote for him.

  • SEXIST REMARK FOR SURE

Stay in denial-land, Obama-ites. It's just as Bill Clinton said of this campaign: It's a myth; a fantasy. Even Jim Jones was able to get people to drink his kool-aid!

  • This is so not an issue

Lots of things about Hillary Clinton's campaign are not fair. She's gotten a hard time from the media about stuff that nobody else would have. BUT not everything is unfair. This quote is an example of making something out of literally nothing.

Seriously. Can't we focus on things that are actually sexist? Drawing attention to comments like this from Obama make Hillary supporters and Broadsheet come across as incredibly reactionary and ridiculous, which I don't generally think either is. It causes a loss in credibility on issues that really are relevant.

And if we want to go there, another commenter several pages back noted that Hillary Clinton has brought her emotions into the race, and others have pointed out that having emotions is not an inherently, exclusively female trait. While I don't think that Obama was trying to poke at Hillary Clinton's femininity here (although that is clearly just my opinion), it is not even that horrific of a thing to do if he was. What, because Hillary's a woman, her emotions are off limits? That's illogical too.

And in regards to a separate issue, I like Bill Clinton and don't care at all about his Lewinsky affairs. However, someone pointed out that his intern was of consenting age as a way to validate that relationship, and that is irrelevant. It is sexual harassment in the workplace when a superior comes on to his/her employee. I don't even have any strong opinions about Bill being a misogynist either way, but that's the fact as it is stated legally.

  • @ @tina schrier

In my humble opinion, I would say these are people with a lot of unresolved issues and I say that as one who at one time or another kept my shrink, in luxury automobiles.

Contrary to popular myth, there is no positive spin on womanizing. Men who engage in it, are not psychologically healthy, especially when the riskier it is, the more likely they are to have multiple affairs. The inappropriateness of Bill's actions, had a lot to do with the brazenness. A need for drama, at all costs. It's not the best think in the country to have a President who does not have control of his libido, as the whole impeachment thing bore out. While lots of us have issues, we're running for POTUS.

As a woman who had a relationship with someone, both different and similar to Bill, I can say from my own experience, that putting up with behavior one strongly objects to, or spending one's life trying to control it, is totally co-dependent. Since Hillary is very much the opposite of a swinging, open marriage type, she has had to jettison big parts of herself, in order to stay in the relationship. It's probably why she comes across as inauthentic.

None of us is perfect, the Obamas probably have some issues too. But the Clinton's are so outsized, so percolating, beneath their together exterior. Bill can only be put in a box for so long. If acts out, what then?
