"this isn't sexist, saying 'periodically' does not imply a reference to menstruation - for God's sake!"
No? How about when Clinton said Obama hadn't done the "spadework" necessary for successful diplomacy, was that a "racially charged" comment worthy of the outrage it provoked from Obama's supporters?
Both charges make about the same amount of sense: none.
Yet it's perfectly OK when Obama's supporters sling such absurd accusations, and it's NOT OK when the Clinton folks do.
That's what Paul Krugman calls the "Clinton Rules."
For the record, here's what Clinton said (from an interview with Andrea Mitchell of NBC News, broadcast on NBC Nightly News, January 6, 2008):
"When [voters] say to themselves, 'OK, I have a choice between a truly inspirational speaker who has not done the kind of spadework with the sort of experience that another candidate has, and now I'm finding out more about the changing positions and some of the different information that's coming out,' let's take a deep breath here."
"Racially charged," my Aunt Louise.

Better question-- damnthatxanadu,
How is it that Clinton supporter can meta-textualize every statement made about their candidate for sexism, but fail to recognize that the Bill Clinton legacy they are running on includes blatant misogyny put into physical practice? If I told you my boss had a history inappropriate relationships with subordinates, including interns- as a feminist, you would rightly be outraged.
Why do you let Bill slide?
Robert Franklin, you miust be young because anybody old enough to remember the 90s knows that Bil Clinton was a good president. In the last 40 years--yes 40--only two Democrats have won the presidency, and only Bill Clinton was elected twice.
So give me a break with this Bill Clinton bashing. I'm sick of it. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of policy AND he could inspire. He won southern states. And he won CA, which had been voting Republican before that. He began the end of the GOPs Southern Strategy. And he appointed more minorities and women to his Cabinet than any previous president, and the GOP viciously attacked him for it. By the time Dubya did the same thing, appointing minorities and women was seen as normal. There would have been no Condi Rice, Colin Powell, or Obama without Bill Clinton.
Now in this Obama campaign, Bill has been rewritten as some racist and the 90s and all of the gains and good things of that decade are being trashed. OBama can't compete with that record of accomplishment, so he has to erase it or denigrate it.
His young minions might fall for it, but not me.
That's the best you can come up with? lol
Sorry, that's a red herring. We're not talking about Bill here, are we?
And you forget, that intern was an ADULT and a quite WILLING participant. I don't recall WHEN sex between adults who are willing became misogynist or sexist.
and the member of a messianic cult I have to say that the Leader is without fault. I should say our Great Leader is Without Fault.

Seriously, I will say that when I read the comment it struck me as slightly sexist, and a slight attempt at humor. And slightly condescending.
But it's true that I didn't find the comment deeply offensive toward women, and I haven't read a lot into it. Maybe he would have been better off saying something like what Clinton said in the Nevada debates. "I don't think they're attacking me because I'm a woman. They're attacking me because I'm ahead." But then again, if he claimed to be ahead, he could easily fall into the category of arrogance. And claiming to be ahead has not been a prescription for winning in this election.
I do think that its interesting and that when Michelle Obama tried using humor in her speeches, talking about Barack being stinky or not putting up the butter, she got knocked down by Democrats like Maureen Dowd for being castrating. I think the fact that the Obamas try to use humor in their approach (even when it falls a little short like here) is overall a not a bad thing. Politics are far too serious to be taken too seriously.
Even Obama supporters will complain next year when they don't get immortality, youth, better sex and free money. That's the nature of your American electorate; you focus on trivialities both to elect your leaders and then to excoriate them. Our recommendation would be to simply outsource your Presidency to some other country. It does not matter which one, just pick one.
This should only go to show us what women are thought of and will again have to put up with.
This remark was a true "Punk" statement.
Everyone should be appalled by this statement by Obama. There is no excuse for demeaning women and that is exactly what he has done.
No one should defend his statement or use the statement that came out of his mouth as a way to deface Senator Clinton.
She was not the one who stated such a thing to him. He was the one to say such words and there is only one meaning to the words he stated.
Every person commenting on this site should take the time and think about the words he said and then think how you would feel if some punk said those words to your Mother, sister, aunt or daughter.
We have enough hate in this world without a “Punk” like this stating comments to a woman we should all respect.
Also, this statement was not just published to the Salon site. I read it in the Boston Globe today and could not get over what nerve Obama had to state such words. He is showing the World the type of person he is, which should show all of you that support him where we will end up if he gets the nomination.
Senator Clinton will always have my vote.
Quote of the day: Obama on Clinton
"I understand that Senator Clinton, periodically when she's feeling down, launches attacks as a way of trying to boost her appeal."
--Sen. Barack Obama speaking about Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign tactics to reporters on Friday, as quoted by the Associated Press.

Of Course, Barack Obama is avoiding debates with Hillary Clinton. It would be obvious he has no specifics to talk about, that is unless one of his staff hands them to him on his way to the speaker's rostrum, or sets them up on the teleprompter.
So Mr. Obama's response is to naturally attack the messenger. That's great.
To continue, let me address the reader here in this fine Salon.com communication center.
Wisconsin's election on Tuesday will be “close” for Hillary Rodham Clinton; but I feel she can win in Texas and Ohio, and will then pull ahead in delegate count. It’s absolutely vital though that Mrs. Clinton gets a strong vote count in Wisconsin on Tuesday. We have to show the country, she can pull ahead and is the “comeback kid”. I ask all great Wisconsin people come out and hit those polls.
Following from the above, I ask all Wisconsin voters to spend 30 minutes doing some research before voting Tuesday.
Go to the Hillary Clinton website, and go to the Issues section, Speeches of Newsroom section, and now a section called “The Fact Hub” in the same Newsroom section.
First, understand Hillary Clinton has been developing and working on this Presidential run — her preparation and planning that is for 3-4 years. For Barack Obama, running for President is a whole new idea for him that he just came up with six months or so ago.
On health care, Hillary Rodham Clinton’s plan will cover everybody. The plan of Mr. Obama won’t. Go into the above “Fact Hub”. Approximately 15 million people will have no coverage under the Obama plan. 15 million people is 5% of the population of all living Americans, and maybe or maybe not, you will or will not have health care coverage under an Obama plan.
Also, read more in the above “The Fact Hub” and you will see untruths and distortions coming from Barack Obama on Hillary Clinton that are false and just not true.
I ask all Americans to listen to what the two candidates are saying, and equally important – what they are not saying. Mrs. Clinton is giving us specifics with a plan. She knows what she’s doing. Mr. Obama is giving us no plan. But his oratory and rhetoric is unbelievable. Every time I hear him I start to feel lifted up. I start to say “pass the plate”, then I realize it is all hot air and empty rhetoric. It reminds me of the great oratory, and rightfully so please of Jesse Jackson in his 1988 campaign to be the Democratic nominee for President with his great lift up our spirits phrase of “Keep Hope Alive”. Mr. Jackson is a great American, a hero to me and many of us. I can believe him. Mr. Obama, I can’t.
Hillary Rodham Clinton should be our nominee for President. She is ready. She has the plans with the specifics, she is ready to lead us all on major change, but I would like to see Barack Obama continue his preaching. The legendary and great Reverend Billy Graham is ailing now, and I can see Mr. Obama coming in and helping out, such as starting his own center of ministry in parallel. The country can use it after these past seven years of lies, deceit, pontification, mistrust, and deep self-interest actions by this current federal government all for the benefit of a privileged few.
Additionally, please go to two excellent articles just published. One is in the Washington Post, and go to Charles Krauthammer, and his excellent article just published titled: “The Audacity of Selling Hope”. I won’t say more, just please study carefully. Also, go to the New York Times website, and go to Paul Krugman and his recent article titled: “Hate Springs Eternal”.
Please study each carefully. Both say we should go with the person who we know can get the job done..... and that is Hillary Rodham Clinton.
I ask the dear folks in Wisconsin, Texas, Ohio, and the remaining states to study all this carefully, and I believe you will agree. Thank you.
