Chris Matthews' mea culpa

The "Hardball" host swallows his pride -- or saves his hide -- by getting all contrite about his treatment of Hillary Clinton.

The letters thread is now closed.

Why watch Hardball?

What I can't begin to fathom is this: If people find Christ Matthews such a irredeemably sexist blowhard, then why even bother tuning in to his show?

It's the 21st century, y'all. You don't have to watch television to get the news anymore.

I found Chris Matthews several decibels too loud years ago, and haven't watched him since. There still seem to be quite a few good ways to get all the information one needs.

Hopefully not a Freudian slip.

And that should be Chris Matthews, not Christ Matthews.

I don't watch Hardball

But he still appears on other NBC shows talking politics, and usually anchors MSNBC's election night coverage, which has a pretty good panel other than him.

I give him some credit for this me culpa, we'll see if he means it.

I hope Chris does not bend over for Hillary, he was correct about her playing the race /gender card

Chris knows how shallow and phony both Hillary and Bill are Hillary is a privledged white woman, Black woman have been a a head of that curve for years on Hillary's true nature.

Bill and Hillary both are losing thier one drop colored status with black voters. The change of voice by Hillary in Black Churches revealed her true nature and color

I hope Chris does not fall for the clever spin Bill and Hillary have now played on MSM. In NH she convinced the MSM that she was a comeback girl with her crying when in truth she blew a hugh lead despite the "bradley effect in play..

Hang tough Chris do not allow her to play with balls..

Thrasher is full of shit, as usual

White punk, he is.

Goddamn, he's a piece of work

With such powers of self-deception and dissembling, it's no wonder he has such a swollen head. He truly believes he can get out of anything, and maybe he can.

So, Rebecca

Have you talked to Joan Walsh, you know, about her new BFF Chris Matthews? They are calling each other "my friend" and "my colleague" and generally going on like a couple of junior high sweethearts.

Poor Tweety....

It's just so hard to be a WASP man nowadays, ya know what I mean? What with women running for office instead of staying in the kitchen and all. You even have to treat her as a serious candidate instead of just telling the broad to bug off and go iron her husband's shirts, and it's just so hard, it's hard!

Of course, it might be a little easier for all of us these days if Tweety (and the rest of the press corps) hadn't pimped so enthusiastically for the twangy frat rat with the thin resume, and tried a little harder to be fair to the nerdy future Nobel prize winner, but I doubt Tweety's little brain comprehends that.

Just what was wrapped in that apology?

We have THAT unfortunate affair of Bill Clinton brought up not merely once, but twice - what a brave woman.

Well did he really have to bring that up twice or is it treating the viewers like the chumps that they are.

SUCKERS!

How can anyone take anything that man says seriously?

Saturday Night Live can't even touch that level of comedy.

You know the defense contractors who sponsor those shows are laughing their tails off.

To them we are all just SUCKERS.

I mean really,

I can't even call you Becky without getting an ass-chewing! You'd think that the slobbering misogynist Matthews would have Joan spinning like a pinwheel for all his crap.

What does a guy have to do to get some respect around here?

Thursday, January 17, 2008 06:34 PM

I won't watch his show!

I'm not going to watch his show just to catch him making another crack about women or anybody else I happen to like. I've had it with him...he has offended me every time I see him and I do not feel he has a good heart.....he is a sensationalist and is hardly worthy to be called anything but a back-biter.

Thursday, January 17, 2008 06:41 PM

Words are cheap.

It's not bad for a start, but let Matthews show by continued words and deed that he's not just another sexist conservative ignoramus.

If he slips back into the Tweety character we all know and loathe, he'll have shown that concern for his job, and not women and the oppressed, is what moved him to utter his apology.

Hang in there Chris... Hillary is trying to play ya..

Chris do not fall for the tears...

Thank You Motor Mouth

Given what has ensued, Matthew's has probably done more for Hillary's campaign than any other person other than herself and her husband. Finally, it appears the sleeping feminists have awakened. It's about time.

It wasn't just the women of my generation who had their "consciousness raised." It was the men too. We paid a price and our children often paid a worse price. Don't say it didn't contribute to the divorce rate, because it did.

The women we married, especially those of us out of the 60's and 70's didn't get anything close to what dear old dad had. That's the truth and many of you were witness to the war if not in it.

To see it all go down the drain because of the backlash both within and outside the "movement" has been pathetic to watch--until now--until Mr. Matthews put his foot so far down his throat. Thank you motor mouth!

I'm going to be surprised if Hillary's numbers don't go up and the "electability" question ends for all but the most backward. Whether we like it or not this election is a cultural referendum just as much as a political one. The two great movements of the last fourty years, feminism and conservatism, are going to face off in this election for better or for worse. Forgive me for tooting my horn: I've been saying it for months.

It didn't register with the professional journalists and pundits because it is not their kind of "fact." Not until now. But it hits at the heart--first of the new generation and hopefully of the generation that started it. The Hillary camp must be delighted.

Chris

I watched Hardball for years and was a long-time Chris Matthews fan. He was one of the few voices who spoke out against the war in Iraq who managed to stay on the air. (In contrast, Ashleigh Banfield, on the same network, spoke out and lost her show.) But over the years, Matthews has become increasingly fawning and obsequious toward Bush administration apologists and corrupt politicians such as Tom Delay, while at the same time saving the hardball treatment for administration critics, such as Katrina Vandenheuvel. Somewhere along the way, Chris Matthews stopped speaking truth to power and started sucking power's dick. I don't understand his long-time hatred for the Clintons, but he is not and has never been fair-minded where Hillary Clinton is concerned. And based on this non-apology apology, I don't think he gets it at all.
