Bush: Plastic bags are "evil"

No, not that Bush, silly! The president's niece, former model Lauren Bush.

Love the Feed Bag

Not here to weigh in on the pros and cons of celebrity charity activity or whether or not Lauren Bush can influence her Uncle -I highly doubt it - but to highly recommend the World Food Programme Feed Bag. I bought one last spring and use it all the time. Its huge. It fits all sorts of stuff. Its cool.

MOST importantly:

Buying one World Food Programme FEED bag feeds a child in school for one school year.

School feeding acts as a magnet, dramatically increasing enrollment, sometimes by as much as 100 percent. It also improves performance at school; children concentrate better on a full stomach. Girls who go to school not only marry later but have half as many children than illiterate women. Furthermore, these children are healthier and better educated.

The second point is what really drove me to buy the bag, especially the part about girls marrying later and having less children. I have always felt that the one of the best ways to help underdeveloped nations is to empower women and reduce population.

Thats it, just want to put in my plug for what I think is a good cause and cool bag. Not interested in splitting hairs about all the nuances of what Lauren Bush said about Uncle Bush. She is doing something worth while to help those in need. Thats more than most of us can claim.

Plastic bags are "evil"

It's about time somebody said it. Millions of useless plastic bags loiter the landfills and other waste depositories, not to mention bags finding themselves in places that don't need the extra burden of this type of environmental "terrorism" i.e. waterways.

Um, what are we supposed to say about former models and their social causes,

I haven't really thought about that much. It seems to me she is an intelligent, beautiful young women. Congratulations to her for her genes, and her development of them.

Or are you referring to her anti-woman slave mongering role along with the Patriarchy in continuing to oppress woman by flaunting her men formed beauty and commoditizing her sexuality to the highest bidder by trading with the enemy and putting on well fitting clothing, clothing that might expose aspects of her feminine body that you think should be wrapped up, kept out of sight, or displayed only behind non-coordinating poorly cut itchy clothing? Maybe a burlap bag?

Evil?

Isn't this just an extension of Bush dualism, which fails to recognise that something can be undesirable without being evil? Evil does not mean "really, really bad."

Thanks for the tip, estherhart.

I'll buy one of those bags right now!

Plastic bags are "semi-evil"

Just a notch below margarine and Diet Coke. We reuse our plastic bags; they're handy for containing our cats' biological waste products, toting our lunch to work so we don't have to drive to the burger joint, and any number of other purposes. They're even good to have when you go to Aldi, which charges for bags and encourages people to bring their own.

The problem lies in how to recycle the darn things. Recycling centers hate it when people like me throw them in with the plastic bottles because it clogs up their shredding machines, so I kinda wonder what certain supermarkets who accept them do with them. Is there some special recycling facility just for plastic bags? If so, why can't I just set them out with my other recyclables on trash day?

For sure when a Bush huffs paint

A quality biodegradable paper bag will do just fine.

Hey wait a minute, if someone wanted her to speak,

Then why is she a model?

Crazy math

According to the Amazon page,

US $20 = The annual cost of WFP's Food for Education program per child.

US $59.95 = The cost of the FEED bag.

So that's $39.95 for a big brown tote bag that looks like a burlap animal food sack?

Objects are Evil?

Plastic bags are not evil, the corporation that profits off of them are......

Duhhhhhhh

Monday, January 14, 2008 01:16 PM

environmentally friendly sax

I have ordered some of these but haven't gotten them yet. But they look great.

http://usa.envirosax.com/pages/products.php?icat=1

Before I saw these, I sewed myself a very basic tote bag out of fabric remnants and it's been working great. Big and washable. I've gotten lots of comments like "good idea" although the bag boy doesn't like them because they don't stand up by themselves.

My resolution this year is to completely stop using plastic bags at the store.

A corporation is still an object, so

Plastic bags are not evil, the white men that run the corporation that prey on your body and work 24x7 to keep you barefoot, pregnant, and in the mines scraping coal, those white men and their brothers and sons and neighbor white men, those white men, and the guys at their church, those white men, and any white guy on the bus with them, or that were biking on the street in their white guy 18 speed those white guys, oh and the white guys on the courier bikes too and the segways and skateboards, those white guys, yes those guys, and their white guy teachers and white guy professors, their white guy fratboys and any white guy bros they hung out with, those white guys and the white guy bagging groceries this morning, THEY ARE TEH EVIL!!!!!

Fixed that for you.

or..

Like IKEA, stores could just start charging for the use of plastic bags. I think it's like $.05 or $.10 for a shopping bag at IKEA?

Monday, January 14, 2008 01:27 PM

For $6 you can get a Russian string bag....

http://www.natashascafe.com/html/bag.html

Avoska String Shopping Bag

A famous Soviet comedian, in making fun of the blatant absence of consumer goods in Russian stores, called the common string bag, that all Russians carried, an "Avoska" Avoska means "just in case" - just in case you can find something to buy you have a bag to put it in. The name stuck

In America you need it just in case you are planet friendly, environmentally concerned, and don't like plastic bags cluttering your closet. Much sturdier than a plastic bag, it easily fits into a pocket, or the most cluttered of glove compartments.

Capacity: a sack-full of groceries, an afternoon's damage at the mall, and the whole family's beach supplies.

$6.00 each, 4 or more $5.00 each, Colors vary

If you like these stylish bags, consider sending me the $31 difference.

Elsewhere in the world...

In Ireland the grocery stores simply charge for bags (I think its 25 cent per, but I can't remember offhand.)
