Denver school board considers family-friendlier policy for pregnant students.
  • Amusing

I am always amused by the letters section after these types of articles - the assumptions are astonishing.

I got pregnant when I was 18 and had the baby at 19. I could have easily had an abortion but I didn't want to. I earned a B.A., then an M.S., with my child at my side every step of the way. I currently earn a six-figure salary. If anyone tried to "shame" us I never noticed cause I generally don't give a rat's ass what other people think.

I did need some help from the public - financial aid for my studies (mostly guaranteed loans) and I attended public universities. I am grateful, and I have more than paid you all back with the outrageously taxes I pay on my salary. Oh well, I don't begrudge it - I just hope it goes to help the next girl who needs it like I did.

If anyone out there thinks that shame, shunning, poverty or anything else is going to stop babies from having babies, you are truly mad. The emotional reasons why I was in that situaton were very complex. I suppose society could have cut me off and I could be waiting tables out there somewhere, but what sense would that have made? Society made a good investment in me.

But whatever - let the assumptions resume!
