  • @Protocols of the Anonymous of Zion

They're either losing their grip on their constituency and having to escalate the verbal violence to retain their attention -- or they're losing their minds.

    Maybe both.

As a Jew, let me assure the anonymous cockroach that I'd never organize anything that stupid. I leave that to the likes of you. Now, why don't you bugger off and poison some wells?

  • Easy on the Islam, people

Nobody's being an apologist for the actions and words and several prominent Islamic clerics/leaders. We don't know the reaction to this by the general populace of these places, mostly because they are under oppressive regimes and it is not in our media's interests to report. There are plenty of Muslims in the western hemi, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, etc. who seem to get along well enough.

Imagine you are from an Islamic culture and the news depicts our culture being led by Jerry Falwell(may God rest his soul), Pat Robertson, Ted Haggard, with a supporting cast of the nuts that protest our own soldiers' funerals b/c of gays. Maybe the people that handle snakes or the Colorado City documentaries can be shown often.

Remember that the Leader! of this country is George Bush, and he has many followers, and he started a war that will kill or harm over 1 million people, mostly evil Muslims that were ready to kill us and cover our women of course.

  • How's that for "potentially oppressive", Tracy?

I was amused to see this quote posted by Tracy Clark-Flory, who, only a few posts down in her video for Broadsheet talked about the hijab as a "gray area" and something that could be used for empowerment as well as oppression.

Read you own literature, Tracy. The purpose of this rag is clear.

  • At least he included some men this time...

Usually it's just the women who get their heads lopped off.

  • They want us to cover our women???

They want us to cover our women???

That does it. Get out the ammunition and pass it around.

All that tireless effort to get our women to bare flesh and wear sexy skimpy outfits must not be lost. Our very civilization depends upon that. How dare they strike at the very core of our nation?

In response to this anti-woman mandate, I urge all females and feminists to strike back against the oppressor and wear even skimpier and sexier outfits than you do now. Casual Fridays? Not good enough! Bikinis, hot pants, halter tops and miniskirts Fridays will help make America number one again.

WE WILL BRING THE ISLAMOFASCISTS TO THEIR KNEES!

Cover our women? NOT ON OUR WATCH!

  • re: "Women who do not respect the hijab and their husbands deserve to die.

Luckily - according to Tracy's thread from the other day - where she denied being hypocritical regarding the forced wearing of this symbol of opression, no woman NEEDS to be forced to wear the hiijab - they WANT to wear it - it's empowering - and fun!

Glad we cleared THAT one up!

  • Put this into context

Quite a few Iranian women have been liberalizing their standard hijab-plus-longsleeved-coat outfits by wearing pink, pushing the hijab back so that some of their hair shows, and so forth. This nutjob cleric's vile comments are an attempt to rein in these uppity women and their supporters and maintain the Islamic hardliners' strict female dress code in the face of the public's desire to relax it.

  • Huh? Hijab?

I thought the proper Iranian term was "chador."

  • More words of love from the Religion of Peace

How dare you oppress Muslims and their women by acting outraged and shocked by what this cleric said!

Besides, I'm sure this is all the Jews' fault anyway. If there's anything I've learned from the Middle East it is this. Whenever something happens that you don't like, it's the Jews' fault. There leaders told me so.

Such a beautiful, peace-loving people these fundies are. We liberals should continue defending them. After all, we want the same things they do, right?

    Right?

  • Mullahs, Ayatollas, Priests, Rabbis, Pastors

One phrase is synonymous for all of them: mysogynist charlatan.

But I must say, for full-stop female oppression, Islam walks away with the award.

  • Well WE all know that women are the most dangerous creatures on the planet

A lion may rend your body but only a woman can steal your soul.

And all you have to do is be able to look at her for her to do that.

However, that's not the point of this post. Your Iranian cleric reminds me of an interaction that occurred at my work 20 years ago. One of the group, a tallish slender young man of the fundamentalist Christian persuasion by the name of Mike was ranting on about the bible. It obviously wasn't the hajib but some other fruitcake thing in the bible about women (so it was obviously Old Testament). At some point, Rich, also known as His Immenseness - a huge man and Jewish, turns on him and towering over him said: "Mike, don't you realize that the bible was written by a bunch of old men to keep the women in line?"

The denouement of this little tableau has Mike's jaw flapping around his ankles and the rest of us collapsed in our chairs laughing so hard we're crying. All fundamentalists, regardless of flavor or persuasion, are, in the words of the 1891 US Army manual, a sly and crafty bunch that bear careful watching.

  • Good catch...

I should have said headscarf instead of hijab. The chador is the voluminous, (usually) black cloak that many Iranian women wear over their clothes while they're out in public. A popular alternative is wearing a longsleeved coat and headscarf, and it's this form of dress that I was referring to.

  • I dectect a note of desperation

Standards are really starting to slip in Iran, all over the place.

Now would be a really good time for Bush & the rest to back off putting pressure on Iran. The theocracy is in deep trouble, the population is heartily sick of the mullahs, and the probably the only way they will be able to stay in power over the next few years is if the population feels threatened and/or humiliated by the West.

It is ironic really, the Iranian theocracy will be brought down by the same forces that essentially brought down the Soviet Union: MTV & HBO, Jordache & Hugo Boss, Maxim & Cosmo, etc. There is no ideology that can stand up to the power of Western crap consumer culture, if given long enough to work its magic.
