The other side of the coin is that white women are perceived as gaining too much power. I have actually worked with a few heavy women in powerful positions. They were hard to ignore. They were also black and Hispanic and didn't hesitate to throw their weight around. A white woman of heft, on the other hand, is perceived as a double threat. We have not come to terms with women having power at all, but it is not so long ago that being heavy was also equated with strength -- think Sumo wrestlers. Skinny guys were not strong or healthy. They were the ones that got sand kicked in their faces at the beach by the hefty muscular guy. Weightlifters still drink high caloric drinks to bulk up. Not all cultures worship thinness. The Chinese do not worship thinness. To many cultures, thinness is too close a reminder of starvation.
