Business Week takes a look at children as just another consumer choice.
  • @ Jeffrey D and RiRedinPA

I choose not to have kids.

I also don't drink expensive Starbucks Lattes.

And I don't refuse to have kids because it will cut into my "shallow, materialistic, consumerist" lifestyle. I'm too poor to even think of that - and even if I were richer, that would not be a desirable way to live.

I barely make $20K a year. I try to be as frugal as possible, saving up money for a used car (which would make life much easier where I live) and an eventual house or condo. I do not believe I could afford to give a child a comfortable life, even if I wanted to have one.

I spend my free time - time I would otherwise have to devote to my children - volunteering at the ASPCA shelter, and at the local VA hospital.

I'm not saying this to pat myself on the back...or to vilify parents who invest all their time in their children.

My point is this: if you have kids, all power to you. I will not stereotype/generalize you in any -ve way.

BUT because I choose NOT to have children, you feel free to vilify and stereotype me as some selfish, crass, shallow materialist who chooses lattes and dining out at expensive restaurants over raising a little Tyler or Dakota?

    How wonderful.

    *****

I've got two words for you....but you should cover your innocent little ones' ears before I say them.
