Burqas vs. lips like "a goose anus"

Artist Marjane Satrapi compares Muslim women's veiling to American women's plumping their lips with collagen.

I was really upset and annoyed by that snotty chick interviewed on Sunday

It sure sounds cute to reduce plastic surgery to goose anuses. But what is she saying? That women should not bother to make themselves feel or look better? Certainly, you cannot find 5% of men in the street that would think it is OK or appropriate for women to do such things to their bodies. So who are these women preening for but themselves?

Also, who is to say men do not do the same or worse, distorting their whole lives around to fit what women demand of us? I am sure many men would be glad not to have to buy nicer clothes, or act a certain way, or say certain things, or go to certain events, or own certain things, or spend oodles of time at the gym, just to appeal to the women in their lives.

Are only men supposed to twist their lives up in an attempt to woo the other sex?

What is with women anyway?!? Fucking complainers. You women act like we should be able to accept you as grungy, unpleasant, rude, selfish, dirty as you can make yourselves out to be. Meanwhile, you ALSO want us men to jump through hoops for you like trained monkey seals or something.

I have given up listening to you fruits on the left with your assinine little training regimens that only encourage women to make such ludicrously unbalanced UNILATERAL demands of us men.

I know we are not equals to you women, so please have some mercy on us poor men who lack the ability to just wag a finger and get people to do your bidding for you.

Mmmmm careful how you say this

Why should we look like some freaks with big lips that look like an anus?

I think this in danger of being a racist sentiment even though she's aiming at cosmetic surgery.

Thanks to hip hop, the standard of beauty across the world has become less white. Flat bottoms and thin lips are out. Curvy behinds and thick lips are in.

As the national poster boy for this transition, consider Brad Pitt abandoning skinny-lipped white girl Jennifer for the plush-mouthed multiracial-looking Angelina.

That's why so many white women are trying to plump up their lips, and why Jessica Simpson wore butt falsies in the Dukes of Hazzard movie.

So Satrapi's comments make me a little uneasy. I understand what she's getting at, but I don't like the way she's chosen to say it.

Yes, they do look strangely like

goose anuses.

Cosmetic surgery behind the veil

Satrapi conveniently forgets that in Islamic countries, those covered up women undergo various cosmetic surgeries, not limited to lip enlargement but also vaginal tightening and fake hymen restorations to pass the virginity test.

I thought the injected lips look rather deformed (they are always a bit askew) and more like the mouth of a carp fish than any anus. Must be in what your associations are. I missed seeing a goose's rear end so far.

Put the kool aid down

I think this in danger of being a racist sentiment even though she's aiming at cosmetic surgery.

I think you are in danger of drinking too much of your own flavor of kool aid.

Huh?

Don't they just have a cloaca like every other bird I can think of? What the hell does a goose anus look like, and how did you find out?

Monday, October 22, 2007 01:45 PM

I wouldn't worry

I think this in danger of being a racist sentiment even though she's aiming at cosmetic surgery.

Naturally-full lips look about as much like collagen-enhanced lips as real breasts look like implants.

oh noes, call the PC Police....

And Silenced shows us why Political Correctness divides people instead of supposedly uniting them. Oh my, some lady said something that someone somewhere might possibly, if put into a certain context, be taken as racist.

Who cares? This woman says how she feels and all of a sudden she is getting psychoanalyzed because, according to some stranger, she could have possibly made a statement that some might perceive as racist when put into a certain context. Maybe she should have realized that people in the US are used to constantly walking on eggshells and aren't allowed to say anything that others might consider offensive? Yay for multiculturalism and political correctness, I mean the modern psychological panopticon and self-censorship.

Divide and conquer.

For every case like this

As the national poster boy for this transition, consider Brad Pitt abandoning skinny-lipped white girl Jennifer for the plush-mouthed multiracial-looking Angelina.

I am certain you can find an equally opposing case.

Personally, I always thought Aniston looked DUMPY and I do not like the lithe muscled body and no hips. Jolie always looks HAWT with her curves and pout-- big lips or not. A counterexample, I was forever in lust with both Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Connelly, but neither one has thick lips.

If it was really true that guys automatically seek out bigger lips, Darwinism would have made sure over time that today women would have lips the size of a set of Ball Park franks.

uh, brightstar

sounds like it's time to get those meds adjusted. Your initial post was somewhat incoherent, and filled with somewhat undirected bile...oh, wait, your posts *always* sound like that.

Nevermind.

Maybe I'm Supposed To Be Offended

but the goose anus crack made me LMAO.

Monday, October 22, 2007 02:44 PM

uhh, obvious question

do anuses have lips?

Monday, October 22, 2007 02:45 PM

flip side of the same coin

i'm also not sure how "goose anus" lips would evoke rascist associations...

i see both practises as flip-sides of the same coin: a woman's sexuality is problematized as either being too provocative for men to handle, hence the need to cover up, or not provocative enough to attract male attention. i consider this a question of mentality rather than a generalizable gender trait, that is, some men and women find female sexuality problematic whereas others don't. at least in the west, women have a choice.

To BS65.

“Also, who is to say men do not do the same or worse, distorting their whole lives around to fit what women demand of us?”

Uhh, not me. BS65, as usual you have little grasp of what women go through, which I see as further proof that it has been a long time since a woman has been in your life. I can’t think of too many men that disturbed their lives to meet the demands of their wives of girlfriends, and quite to contrary, it is common to meet women that quit their jobs, moved away, went on diets, joined gyms, stopped seeing their best friends, and got plastic surgery just to please the men in their lives. The customers of plastic surgeons are overwhelmingly women, and the primary reason for getting their plastic surgery, is to make themselves more appealing to men, which does cause society to objectify women even more.

Though I am having trouble understanding the similarity of the reductive qualities of the veil, or lack of veil, and lip surgery.???? One is an issue of faith, and the other is an issue regarding increasing one’s sexual appeal. If you are more or less of a committed Muslim, are you more or less sexually appealing?

However, my darling, Marjane Satrapi, must have been onto something, as talk about anuses and DSL (dick sucking lips) has increased a lot around here since my coworkers saw her interview, and yes, the topic of worshiping both has come up.
