I don't know where they heard that from...
Vicodin doesn't really suppress your appetite. It can make you nauseous at first, but once you take it more than two or three times in a row, it can give you the munchies just like pot. It certainly wouldn't be used as a diet drug. See: Adderall, Ritalin, methamphetamines. Depressants slow you down and reduce the amount of calories your body burns. I smell bullshit.

Vicodin
Though the individuals referred to in the article may indeed be taking Vicodin (hydrocodone) because they feel vicodin suppresses their appetite, there is not an established connection between the use of any opiate and appetite suppression. In fact a quick search on med-line showed no studies even evaluating a relationship between opiates and anorexia (the loss of appetite, not the diagnosis). While I agree that the use is for that intended consequence, I would encourage an alteration of your language from appetite supressing vicodin to vicodin to try and suppress appetite. One implies proven knowledge while the other implies intent on the individual ingesting the medication.
Thanks

Vicodin
I looked up official side effects and it listed "nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite".
Even if the stuff doesn't usually work that way, if the models think it will, some will take it. Just like cigarettes don't actually make you lose weight....

I must disagree with AnnieW
The maker of Vicodin is Abbott Pharmaceuticals and the package insert from their webpage which is current for 2007 does not list loss of appetite. I actually agree with your point about the perceptual issue, but feel I must correct the facts. I have included the link for reference.

Who is Megan?
And where did she learn to write? (do they offer night courses?)
Great job!

Child Abuse
My daughters were rather attractive as children, and a coworker was always urging me to get an agent and hire them out as models. I ignored this, but then she went and found a talent scout, who came to a soccer game to see them, and tried to get us to sign them up on the spot (they were about 6 at the time).
They dangled rather amazing amounts of money in front of us, and even better, the prospect of a career as a model as they grew up! It was all rather sickening, actually, both the scout and my coworker looked at us like we were idiots for telling them to shove off. I almost had the impression that they thought WE were the child abusers, denying our children this great opportunity.
I remember at the time I thought to myself, why not, a few bucks for their college fund, and I'll be there right? But we said no, and boy am I ever glad now that they're in their mid-teens. They could be there now, popping pills and smoking and not learning to read and write.
And why why why does the industry favour children and scrawniness? Presumably they are marketing women's clothing to women, so you'd think that they would want models that actually look like women? I've never understood this; I'm not sure I buy into the idea that it is gay designers trying to make models look like boys, but it is the only explanation I've heard that made any sense at all.

Strange indeed.
Isn't it though? Here is this industry, defining what is "hawt" and trying to sell product and image to women (who theoretically have more money than girls), and yet, the image of woman used to sell the product is so rare in the natural world that many of the models use unnatural means to look like a 14 year old girl.
The other fashion industry - like Victoria Secret - use another rarified female form - the tiny woman with no thighs and large round high breasts - to shill their product.
And women, we buy it, don't we? And then there is the diet and plastic surgery industries, ready to get the rest of our money when we feel like crap because not only do the clothes and bras not look good on our natural bodies, but they only draw our attention to how we don't "measure up".
Stupid Girl, indeed.

What's the appeal?
Why do people pay attention to the fashion show realm? I have no idea.
