Quote of the Day: Jenna Bush on condoms

Does the first daughter's position on safe sex conflict with her dad's abstinence-only views?

The letters thread is now closed.

Wow

I hope she said that while sipping a bourbon and smoking a Cuban cigar while wearing men's clothes.

What a nutty family....

There comes a time in every parent's life...

when your children become smarter than you are. For GW, that came when Jenna was about 2 years old.

To Professor

Isn't George H.W. Bush still waiting for that moment?

Did she really write that book?

I wonder how much of the book was actually written by her. how did she do her research? It seems like a subject very far from home, although drums up good press for dad.

? for TCF

Do your views on sex conflict with your dad's views?

It's called autonomy.

If you fool me...you can't get fooled again.

"I don't think so ... Abstinence is important; if you don't want any chance of getting a disease, then don't have sex. But if you're HIV positive and you have sex, you must always use a condom. You can't talk about being a teenage mother and stopping the spread of AIDS without talking about condoms."

Like her father's talking points, Jenna's response is completely nonsensical. If you don't want to contract HIV then abstinence is the only solution, but (apparently) teenage mothers and people who have already contracted HIV are incapable of not having sex. Huh? Her entire response is as clear as mud.

I imagine her prose is equally elegant.

Why must we always disrobe?

PETA, peace protests, Poland's politician - why do so many women feel compelled to get naked to make their argument? You don't see men doing these mass disrobings.

If you have something valid to say, it seems to me saying it should be sufficient. If you have to get naked to make people listen to you, I doubt the value of your speech.

The Big Question would have been...

...are you in agreement with and do you practice your father's policies?

But, hey, what's a little hypocrisy among Repugs. Not like she was tapping her widely stanced foot in a restroom stall or anything.

She must have been drunk...

or chatting on her cellphone during the safer sex lectures she, uhm, attended, because she can't even get the basic principles down pat. The only people who should use condoms are those with HIV? Kee-rist!! What a dipshit! I guess the proverbial apple didn't fall far from that tree.

But there are dumber people out there...like anyone who'd spend good money on a book "written" by this dim bulb boozer.

Any other sexually transmitted disease or infection is "mild enough" to be just desserts for having sex. Pregnancy also falls under the "just come-uppance" category. But HIV? Well, HIV is too harsh a punishment and can potentially be spread to innocents through non-sexual contact.

It's about justice, people.

@mizbinkley

Oh my, I never thought of it in those terms, but I can see your point. It's all so clear to me now. Jenna didn't have her facts and safer sex strategies dangerously wrong--she was actually promoting the ideal form of "justice" in sexual matters as espoused by the Right. How could I have missed it?! Of course! Abstinence is the ideal, but we all know that if that won't carry you through, nothing beats a nasty STI as a way to remind young adults of their community's "moral" standards. Thank you for helping me to see the light!

safe sex

Apparently the obvious isn't so obvious. A young girl with a baby in a distressed situation probably isn't going to have the choice of being abstinent. She will do what it takes to survive, and it's not too likely that any of her "benefactors" will concern themselves much with condoms. Jenna should be commended for looking beyond herself and trying to make even a small difference in an extremely tragic situation. Better to get press for trying to do good than for for DUI'S and naughty photo ops. ettie
