  • Women can do no wrong! Typical Patriarchal SLUT SHAMING!

    Amy Winehouse is EMPOWERFUL!

Why on earth would anyone think that Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Amy Winehouse, or the Pussycat Dolls have an effect on young women?

THIS IS THE SAME SLUT SHAMING AS SOUTHWEST AIRLINE'S TORTURE OF HEROINE KYLA EBBERTS!!!!

Remember Sisters, Women can do not wrong, it is the MEN that are to blame for having a biology that is attracted to these women.

The women are the victims here!!!!!!!

  • Today in the News

Pedantic "experts" in abstinence research took a break today from anonymous public restroom sex and self-fellation to issue a fictional report and to express shock that someone somewhere might be getting laid. Who wasn't them, specifically.

  • @Anan 01:34 PM

Wow! An Anonymous comment in Broadsheet that I can wholeheartedly agree with!

I think this is a first.

  • edgore

oh wow, so you agree with namecalling and generalizations!! How enlightened of you?!

Lets be a little more intelligent. Our culture does promote these activities. US Weekley and Ok or whatever these young girls are reading, goes to great lengths to publicise these young misfits. Just saying, "there goes lindsey acting up again", but then tacitly admitting that she's the coolest girl in the world, doesn't exactly DISCOURAGE those activities.

But, edgore, I'm sure you're happier blaming that senator who likes to give out BJs. HAHAHA, he's a republican. right?

i thought liberals were supposed to be smarter than us.

  • Sex-promoting libbie

That's me. People should have sex. Lots of it. Frequently. It's healthy, unlike the twisted views toward sex promoted by the right wing in America. Certainly it would behoove people to follow safe-sex practices, but if more people had sex, fewer people would be so whacked in the head.

Here's what we know for sure about Republicans: they promote a twisted, bitter view of sexuality that leads to more unwanted pregnancies, wider spread of STDs, and more domestic violence -- it's no accident that all of those things are worse in conservative parts of the country than in more liberal parts of the country. Like everything else, conservatives are terrified of sex, and that fear makes this nation a worse place to live.

So listen, righties. Get laid, don't feel bad about it, and mind your own business when it comes to everyone else's sex lives.

  • Rock Stars

Amy Winehouse (& Courtney Love, &, I suppose, Britney Spears for that matter) are just doing what male rock stars have been doing from day 1. Puts me in mind of Keith Richards or Sid Vicious. So in an odd sense it might actually be considered empowering.

And damn but Winehouse can sing. I hope she has an outcome more like Richards' than Vicious.

  • Headline we'll never see in Broadsheet...

..."Strong Empowered Woman Seen As Negative Role Model"

Nope, can't be the drinking, the domestic disturbances, the sullen defiant self-destruction, the pop stardom. Why would anybody think that might be a mixed message?

  • Righties? It seems to be the feminists that get most upset about other people's sex lives!

Dress like this, don't dress like that. Think like this, don't think like that. That practice is demeaning. Except when me or my friends do it. Shave there. Don't shave there! Your sex is awful until you've seen VM more than 10 times! Men objectify women. Women don't objectify men. But most men are so flabby now.

Hooters is bad. But dressing like a hooters chick on an airplane is okay. But buying bratz dolls is bad. And Pussycat Dolls are bad. Except I do like listening to their music.

    Blah blah blah.

I think the feminists have a lot in common with the sex prudes on the right.

They all should mind their own business, right Ms. Loeb?

  • Rock stars...

..."Amy Winehouse (& Courtney Love, &, I suppose, Britney Spears for that matter) are just doing what male rock stars have been doing from day 1. Puts me in mind of Keith Richards or Sid Vicious."

And this is an apologia? Kinda proves the point, doesn't it?

  • @Anonymous (from 2:25)

I think the feminists have a lot in common with the sex prudes on the right

Some of the more extreme radfems, absolutely. They all share a reactionary puritanism that hates sexual behavior and erotic pleasure.

  • Big Deal

So the self-indulgent, self-destructive, erratic behavior of some female celebrities is being criticized for sending bad messages to young girls...just like similar behavior exhibited by male celebrities has been condemned for decades for its messages to kids, especially boys. So? What's so outrageous about that? Seems to me that it smacks of a certain equality. Women now have as much, or almost as much, liberty to f*ck up their lives as men do, and among celebs get equal or perhaps even more coverage than the men do, and so they can now also be criticized as much as the men for any influence they might have on younger people who look up to them. What's good for the gander is good for the goose.

And some of the female misbehaviors are things peculiar to them. Britney Spears refusing to wear panties and rather deliberately flashing her pink bits at the paparazzi, for instance. When was the last time that a major male pop music star exposed his genitals to a bunch of flashing cameras as he was exiting a vehicle? Hmm...can't think of an example off the top of my head.

This "Oh my God! Women are being criticized in the media in some fashion! This must NOT be allowed to stand!" mentality needs to be taken to the curb with the other rubbish.

  • Anonymous 1:24 & 2:08, who I presume are the same person

You said: "i thought liberals were supposed to be smarter than us."

Edgore pretty much proved that *he* is smarter than you. Whether he's liberal or not is undetermined, but at least he can read time-stamps. And he has a sense of humor, to!

  • You presume too much

I was the first anon, but not the second.

Are you often so presumptuous? Who have you killed based on your often incorrect presumptions?

  • @ leftychris

Jim Morrison. On stage in Florida. Got busted for it too.

  • one != often

  • Hollywood's to blame for all of societies problems!!!

If they would just make everything on TV look like the "Andy Griffith Show" again, all of societies problems will magically go away! I accuse liberals of being thought police and then turn around and say they should be arrested for treason if they criticize the war or I tell them how to dress or what they can read, watch, or listen to!
