  • MIsogyny at work

I don't understand how this can be in Broadsheet, other that your need to celebrate any high profile failure by a man.

  • Don't Dilute Broadsheet

"But second, female readers, can we discuss for a moment how terrifying this behavior would be in the women's room?"

This is quite a stretch to give this issue a Broadsheet angle.

  • Unbelievable? Not Really!

catherine -- you really hit the nail on the head when you wrote that the hypocrisy here is delicious...it really is delicious when you consider all the circumstances surrounding this. one of my co-workers came into my office this morning and asked if i could believe this latest turn of events from the republicans and i truthfully answered: yes...yes i can believe it. this is such typical behavior from the republicans. last night on his syndicated comedy show, conservative talk-show-host mark levin was ragging on bill clinton for being a perv in the white house. so bill was getting a little on the side in the privacy of his own (for the time being) home. at least he wasn't cruising rest stops and department store or airport restrooms for his fun. but he was also not trying to tell everyone how morally superior he was to everyone else. bill clinton would make a horrible republican!

  • Dear topic police, take a xanax.

What the post lacks in relevance, it more than makes up for in interesting subject matter. I'm calling it: 2007 will be known as the death of social conservatism. Go Rudy!

  • No Xanax Needed

    Interesting subject matter, yes.

So interesting it's already being covered elsewhere on Salon.

  • Aw, the poor guy

To sympathize with the man for a second, let’s remember – Hot Airport Action is probably the best this guy can hope for. Seriously, his wife wouldn’t be very understanding if he brought a boyfriend over. He wouldn’t dare show his face in a gay bar. Internet dating could land him on Dateline – what’s a poor, closeted hypocrite to do? If he hadn’t made a career out of gay bashing, I’d feel bad for him.

Right now it just makes me giggle.

  • Larry Craig

got what he deserved. Too bad it's taken this long. Hypocrite. Nope, don't feel sorry for him.

This guy on the other hand, I feel sorry for:

  • Look

I think that Larry Craig is a closeted homo, as he was outed a while ago (at least, he was accused a while ago of having bathroom hook-ups, by BlogActive). That said, the behavior described in this report wouldn't have held up in court if the Senator had fought it. I'm shocked that he plead guilty.

Read some of the Wonkette coverage - it's pretty funny.

  • hate to burst everyone's bubble...

...but, forget about Republican Sen. Craig. Let's pretend this was an anonymous offender. How do you prosecute this offense?

Does anyone know if there was any hard evidence? [Definitely no pun intended.] I assume there's a video recording or something that substantiates the officer's story. Otherwise, we're treading on dangerous ground.

Furthermore, what crime actually occurred? Isn't there a great deal of speculation in play here? Nothing "lewd" happened, right? Maybe there are more details than those Price reports, but, as is, it borders on homophobia to me. Even if it was a pick up attempt, that doesn't mean it was going to lead to sex right there in the stall. Doesn't this presumption play to stereotypes of gay men? Don't straight folks get a lot more leeway in this respect?

While I get that everyone wants to gloat, I'd like to err on the side of the presumption of innocence and the rule of law.

  • Fag hags?

Xanax? I've often wondered why Broadsheet is also the de facto Gay Ghetto for Salon. "Not that there's anything wrong with that," to again quote Seinfeld.

  • Someone should do a study

to compare "socially conservative" politicians and moderate ones (there are no "socially liberal" ones left to compare - is there any major politician who actually supports gay marriage?), to see what the correlation is between taking hard-line conservative positions on these sexually-based "family values" issues and getting caught with your pants down (so to speak) in these sex scandals. Cause it seems like it'd be a positive correlation. Nearly everyone, Mark Foley, Ted Haggart, etc., that has these issues are hardcore social conservatives.

Oh and as for whether it's Broadhseet-relevant -- first of all even if it's not, so what who cares -- secondly, it is about a sexuality issue.

  • I''m not surprised

That another GOP person is outed as at least bi-sexual.

What I am surprised at is that he plead guilty, feet touching and hand waving don't really seem all that clear cut that he was looking for sex in the bathroom, maybe he would have set up a rendevous somewhere else after getting that guys number. It just shows that these guys lie, lie, lie to get elected. Maybe these GOPers could be free of hypocrisy if they stop pandering to the religious, moral family values crowd and just stick with fiscal responsibility. Their religious agendas are the main reason I never vote republican.

  • TERRIFYING???

You would be TERRIFIED if a woman in the next stall waved her hand under the stall wall? I hope I'm never in the stall next to you and need a spare square.

  • too bad deliciousness is the by-product of homophobia

I love that a gay-bashing GOP Senator was caught (allegedly) dabbling in "the lifestyle," too. But what was the police officer doing luring Craig in with the whole foot sliding bit? How is it that the officer's behavior isn't seen as entrapment? And to repeat other comments, it wasn't like Craig actually *did* anything explicitly sexual here. We arrested a man for waving his hand under the stall?

It's too bad that Craig was caught by police using the same tactics they've used to harass gay men for decades. Surely if they just wanted to prevent public sex in the airport bathroom, there were other ways to do so. Maybe just post a security guard at the suspected bathroom? The entrapment behavior here makes it pretty clear that the police weren't interested in preventing public sex as much as looking for ways to humiliate and criminalize gay men.
