I can not speak directly for the persons and families that I have interviewed, but I can give a general direction of what they would say regarding Mr. McClellan's behavior.
TO: Jack McClellan
From: Those who are trying to recover their lives from a sex offense charge.
We the convicted, the families and the spouses, brothers and sisters, would really like you to shut up and keep it to yourself. We would like to see you obtain counseling and realize what you are sickly promoting to those who might even think what you are doing is normal and then go out and do something to someone's son or daughter.
We would also like to let you know that you put our husbands, sons or grandsons in danger, that you draw unneeded attention to those who want to reclaim their lives, be healed and someday wake up to a normal life where we don't have to fear vigilante behavior wherever we are living or working. Where our children will not be harassed at school because of a parent's or siblings offense and where someday we pray we don't have to be on a public register and be a target for hatred.
All you are doing is playing a selfish game of "pay attention to me" all the while making it worse for the rest of us trying to recover our lives to simply live. You, McCellan will help create a worsened state of hysteria rather than free those who are trying to recover from it.
You are mentally ill, and we hope someday you "get it" and stop perpetuating the fear and hysteria in our country.
Signed: The families of those who are trying to recover
On another note:
We are asking the wrong questions about McClellan and to him. We need to find out how he became this way. People, according to evidence may have a biological reason to prefer one sex over the other, however, preferring LG's as McClellan's calls it, seems to be a learned response. We need to understand his pathology so we can help others either prevent it, or heal from it.
tell me where a crime has been committed. i want to know. it's not a crime to be a freaky weirdo. it's not a crime to say you want to have sex with children (doing so is the crime).
the guy is creepy. super creepy. so far, he's done nothing other than BE creepy. we (as in everyone, not just here at salon) have given this creep so much of our valuable time and energy it's nauseating.
look at how much publicity the creepy guy is getting? he seems to be really good at getting himself huge PR. likely what he's wanted all along. amazing to be one of the most famous pedophiles with no record of ever even touching a child.
I'm sure the parents of these children whose photographs or descriptions appear on the pedophile blog feel like stalking victims. These children are being stalked. Though this guy hasn't "done" anything (yet, that we know of) physical to any child, every child he has mentioned on his blog is now a target. What he has "done" is taken away their sense of security and safety, impacted on who/where/with whom the kids play, and cause everyone wholoves them to be continually looking over their shoulder.
Yes it's a dangerous world and everyone can be a potential victim. But that's different than seeing your kid singled out as pedophile bait and slobbered over. There is a victim, even if there's no recognized "crime". And that victim's life is changed, significantly.
Much as I dislike the notion of "thought police," we as a society have deemed certain attitudes to be unacceptable. It is unacceptable to use children for erotic pleasure. This is why we have laws against kiddie porn, and even laws against photo-doctored kiddie porn (where children appear to be engaging in sex acts, or appear to be naked, when they weren't photographed thusly). This man may non be saying "On Sunday next I will kidnap and rape this child", but his blog certainly demonstrates that he takes erotic pleasure in children in general, and particular children in specific.
Homeland security empowers law enforcement to criminalize certain thoughts. This pedophile is a terrorist in the truest sense of the word: he may not fly planes into buildings, but he makes people terrified for the safety of their children.
This man, according to every report I've read, hasn't actually broken any laws. I don't know what he is posting on the internet, but apparently it isn't crossing the line between legal and illegal. How can we punish somebody who claims to have an urge we find repulsive, but who also claims to have no intention of acting on that urge, and is in fact working to ensure that he doesn't act on it. Is it illegal to want to kill somebody if you have no intention of doing so? Is it illegal to want to rob a bank if you don't plan on doing it? How can it be illegal to want to molest a child, if you know that urge is wrong and refuse to even consider acting on it?
If he crosses a line, then he should be prosecuted an punished. But this doesn't seem likely. He would not draw so much attention to himself if he actually wanted to molest children. Those people tend to hide in the shadows. In my mind, this falls into the "ku klux klan" category of activity. It's okay to feel things that aren't socially acceptable, as long as you don't hurt more than feelings in the process. We should shun people like this, not punish them.
From what I've read, there were two court orders issued based on... nothing. As creepy and icky as this man may be, he has not - to our knowledge - committed an illegal act. I'd like to know the basis for the court orders as well as the legal basis for forbidding him to take pictures in public.
Insert obvious disclaimer here: this is not in any sense a support for pedophilia.
