  • That's hilarious!

Thanks for the story and the links!

  • Equal Opportunity Idiocy (and cruelty)

Great. Some women in Spain want to show the world that they can be as cruel and stupid as their men.

In the running of the bulls, I always root for the bulls. The more idiots they trample and gore, the better. In bullfights, I always cheer when I read of a matador getting hurt, and preferably killed. I have no pity at all for the people who engage in this disgusting ritual of cruelty to animals. My pity is only for the bulls who are tormented and killed for the sake of a twisted audience's pleasure.

  • after having read the manifesto online

I think the girls are trying to use humor to point out what a stupid institution the running of the bulls is. Of course the english translation was a little spotty but that's my take.

I always thought the anti-bullfight people were probably right but it seemed like a silly thing to harp on to me. So when I was in Spain some folks wanted to go to the bullfight I thought, "Well, okay, when in Spain..." My god was it horrific. I've never witnessed such brutality in my life. One of the American guys in our party ended up leaving 'cause he couldn't take it. Afterwards all the Americans felt really guilty for having participated in such a barbaric institution. The part with the matador shoving his sword in seems sort of romantic and fairly quick and painless. The part you don't often see is large teams of men spend a long time torturing the poor creature before the matador even comes into play. The worst part for me was seeing the bull charge around with big bloody darts coming out of its back.

  • Feminist Humor?

    Here's some for ya'

Q: How many feminists does it take to screw in a light bulb?

    A: Thats not funny!

  • i'm a feminist

and that's one of my favorite jokes.

    ironic isn't it.

  • Is this about PETA, feminism or lesbians?

I'm needing a program to keep the players 'straight'.

  • Somegirls, I wish you were right...

...but I think you're wrong, at least based on this article and other stuff I've read. This seems to be a protest regarding the sexist nature of the running of the bulls, and not a protest against bullfighting itself.

  • Two different things

I don't know if these women are joking or not, you've got to think they are given how silly it all is and the fact that women do participate in the running of the bulls.

The point that is getting lost here is that the Running of the Bulls and a bull fight are two different events. Same bulls, different activities. And not that I'll defend either (although I had a damn good time at that festival the time I went - I did not attend a bullfight) the bulls are not hurt for or during the running. They did seem a bit bewildered, though.

  • I suppose you could have a bull run without a bull fight

But that's not how it happens. The whole thing is to run them across town to the bull ring.

I doubt very seriously there would be much interest otherwise.

  • I'm not sure where lesbians came into the conversation

but I guess we could talk about them if RealName wants to.

I just read an article that one of the leaders of the group said in a radio interview that it started out as a joke over real concern that not many women felt comfortable running with the bulls.

That doesn't help me at all. So are they making fun of women for being chicken? Or feminists who demand special treatment? Or perhaps the translation is ishy and it should say "real concern that not many women felt comfortable with the running of the bulls?

Who knows but I think it's really funny. And to me it points out how completely rediculous the whole thing is even if that's not the original intent.

I'm sure Hester had a great time in Pampalona. The Spanish really know how to party. But there are plenty of completely awesome festivals that don't include animal cruelty.

  • It's a joke, people...

They're making fun of the (mostly male) idiots who get drunk, rile up large, horned animals, then run away from them to prove their bravery.

Besides, the mental image of anyone, male or female, being chased by cows is just funny. Cows generally don't like to move very fast. Their udders get in the way of their back legs when they run.

  • I appreciate the humor and everything, but...

...if women can legally participate in the Running of the Bulls, what's the problem? That the police don't like it? Boo hoo. You think they'd like a Running of the Cows?

In light of this, I guess I don't understand what they are trying to say, Please to be explaining.

  • My understanding (gezelligtexas)

... is that yes, women are technically permitted to participate, but the cops make it tough sometimes nonetheless. So this is simply a funny, deliberately hyperbolic way of saying, hey, the gals want in on the bull-running fun. (Or "fun," depending on your taste.)

  • Hey Lynn, are you a farkette too?

Too cool Lynn, I didn't realize you were a farkette! What's your farkette name there?

I think it's a shame that so often people think of FARK as a home for misogyny. Take a look at the very reasonable attitude of FARK with regard to a CBS article about aging actresses.

FARK misogynistic? Much less so than mainstream news. I would think that debunking the myth of misogyny at FARK would be an interesting Broadsheet posting!

    http://forums.fark.com/cgi/fark/comments.pl?IDLink=2921138

Okay, now that Lynn has outed herself, how many other Broadsheet authors and commenters are farkettes? Tracy? Joan? Catherine? Lestat?

  • I have to give you credit Lynn for responding in the comments

I think it's more than a shame, I think it's a loss and cowardly when the Broadsheet authors don't discuss their posts.

And it is seen in both the quality of the posts and the quality of the commentary.

  • There's also a meta-interpretation ...

... that they're just poking good-natured fun at the whole macho (macho-chistic?) undertaking.

PS To answer the Fark question: Sorry, not so much a farkette as a lurkette.

  • Poking good natured fun?

I suppose that's one interpretation, and if it's what they're really doing, then it reflects pretty badly on them. The running of the bulls is part and parcel of the ultimate activity, which is the bloodsport of bullfighting. You don't "poke good natured fun" at atrocities. You condemn them.
