How do they define "porn" in Iran?
Is it what we consider to be porn here? Or is it a movie that hints that intercourse took place? Don't get me wrong; I think it's horrible no matter what. I'm just a little confused by how they plan to define it. Lord knows, we've had the argument in the US for years. Something tells me, however, that many Hollywood movies would be considered porn over there - not just Paris et al.
Even if they don't disproportionately target women (which I'm sure they will) the nature of the law could possibly be targeting art in a larger context. Will the law apply to any art that depicts women as sexual beings?

RJStanford read the whole article please
The 60% figure they get from averaging back since the early release program began, which was five years ago.
And the time off for good behavior is normal -- that doesn't count as early release. All of the release statistics take that into account.
YOu see, the overcrowding gets worse every year. So every year, the normal time shrinks. Go to the LA Times and look at their graphics, maybe you'll understand it if you can see the visuals.
The 60% figure is an average over that whole five years, but during that five years, the average for each year has been tending downward -- because the overcrowding has been tending upward.
Get it? Or is the math too hard?
So now -- this year, the year we're living in, women with her level of sentencing are normally released immediately.
Can you imagine the savage howling and wailing from all corners of America if she'd really been treated like a normal prisoner and let go with an ankle bracelet on her first day?
Well, you don't have to imagine it I guess.
The braying hyenas were so loud, they could probably be heard on the moon.
But it's hard to argue with a lynch mob.
Congratulations to everyone in the Salon lynch mob.

So I don't think we have such a right to criticize Iran
Look at the news media -- nobody is picking up the LA Times story. They don't want to hear it. Nobody wants facts.
We're a kind of religious extremist republic too. Politicis is our religion. And our religion says that the skanky porn b*tch must die.
People here agree with me, right? I see agreement. That's why Tracy mentioned Paris in this article to begin with, right?
The skanky porn b*tch must die.
Well, she won't die, but she's going to serve 23 days in solitary confinement while poor black women with the same crimes are allowed to go home with an ankle bracelet the same day.

**sigh**People, the responses are NOT equal!!
To all the writers who are saying that Iranian treatment of women - such as porn stars in this case - is no worse than sexism in the US:
If a woman commits adultery in the U.S., she might suffer gossip on the part of her coworkers, neighbors, etc.
If a woman commits adultery in Iran, she gets stoned to death.
If a woman wears short shorts in the summer in the US, she may get sexist catcalls from men.
If a woman exposes anything above her ankle or wrist in Iran, she's arrested...or, depending on the mood of the Islamic police/male villagers - stoned to death.
If a woman holds hands with a female lover while walking down an American street, she may get dirties looks from Xtian evangelical fundies.
If a woman is even suspected of being intimate with another woman in Iran....can you guess what happens?
Yup - bring on the stones.
***************
I oppose misogyny of any kind - but this asinine attempt to equate American sexism with Iranian sexism is analogous to equating a parent who yells at their kid to a parent who beats their child to death.
And by the way, I despise Dubya and the neocons just as much as anyone else - but just because they unjustly want to invade Iran does NOT give the latter a free pass to make a MOCKERY of human rights and freedoms.
If you believe that it does, you're not only a hypocrite but a fascist as well...

Paris.
Somebody please write an article about Paris so we don't have to read about her in the letters for every other article.

Strawman ...
Lonewolfy rants:
To all the writers who are saying that Iranian treatment of women - such as porn stars in this case - is no worse than sexism in the US ...
But of course, no-one actually said that. (If you're talking about Linney Uston's post, I'll happily fax you the dictionary entry on irony)

Ha ha anonymous
We don't hate paris because she did a porn shoot. Hell, a lot of us probably enjoyed it.
It's the complete disregard that she has for others that we hate her for. The drunk driving on a suspended license, which was suspended for drunk driving, when she is rich enough to hire a cab or a fucking helicopter if she wants to, that's why she needs to do time. She could have killed folks because she wants to drive drunk, just because she wants to, and because mommy can make sure she doesn't go to jail.
You can try to make it about the sex video all you want and it doesn't change anything. It's not.
Nicole, is that you? Paris, is that you, somehow posting from prison?
