About the quaint and interesting customs of far off indigenous peoples. After all this is Salon.com. America sucks, Israel sucks. Viva La Revolucion!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Isn't this just a distraction from how bad things are in the US?
Sure, maybe Iran has some customs we don't like, but here in the US we have wet t-shirt contests, attempts to put light restrictions on abortion and even-- oh, horror of horrors-- leering construction workers who catcall when you walk down the street!
And what of liposuction, anorexia, tacky advertisements and the low self-esteem of adolescent girls? Aren't those exactly as damaging for women as mandatory chadors and public executions?
Things are very bad in this country-- perhaps even worse in some ways-- and I don't see how it helps to focus everyone's attention away from the desperate needs of the real underclass: white, affluent college-educated women who read Broadsheet.

Since you brought it up, here's some news from the LA Times. I think this is relevant because it shows the social and political power of hate, especially hatred towards sexual women:
Paris Hilton will end up serving more time behind bars than the vast majority of inmates sent to Los Angeles County jail for similar offenses, according to a Los Angeles Times analysis of jail records.
So the national outcry over her early release has resulted in her serving extra time compared to the norm.
Hmmm... that means she's in jail now just because people hate her.
And later they go on:
The Times analysis of jail releases found that more than 60 percent of those with similar cases to Hilton's walked free after serving less than half their time. Under the department's current guidelines, Hilton likely would have served even less time. Most non-violent female offenders sentenced to less than 90 days are released immediately.
Yup, she'd be home now if so many people didn't hate her. So she's serving time now for the crime of being hated.
And that's what Iran is about too -- hating on skanky porn b*tches, right? Cheering when they get locked behind bars.
It all fits together. We're not as different as we think.

I really dislike Paris Hilton.
My dislike for Hilton has absolutely nothing to do with her being "sexual," and everything to do with her being a spoiled brat that constantly rubs our noses in what a spoiled brat she is. If she was just a spoiled brat, and kept it to herself, no problem. She is in the public eye of her own free will.
It's the elite entitlement, with no consideration for others that I dislike about her. That's also why I dislike Bush (among other reasons). So don't say it's gender related either.

As Paris was going to do as well, since she was sentenced to 45 days that was reduced to 27 days for good behavior before she'd even started serving it. That's right at 60%, if you're counting. Of course, that was before daddy pulled some strings and she was wrongly released from jail against explicit sentencing instructions... maybe that has something to do with it?
Nah, you're right, its just because she's popular.

The calculus of oppression
Clearly this will be applied far more to women than to men. There's no reason to even ask. The calculus is simple:
Patriarchal religion = Make women subordinate, invisible, otherwise dead if no option remains.
Patriarchal culture = Make women uncertain, esteemless, valueless except as a commodity of/mechanism for male expression.
Patriarchal governance = Make women secondary, powerless, get them to collaborate in their own oppression.
This latest ruling only confirms that Iran has "hit the trifecta" in the patriarchal stakes. Not too late to place your bets though, America is in the chute for the next race.

Personally I couldn't care less
Every other day there's a blurb-ette on Salon and similar progressive mags that assert this huge disconnect between "Iran" and "Iranians" and how they're really all our bestest friends for life one on one. It's those crazy Ayatollahs that muck up everything.
Well ok then, when they're done hanging in public from cranes all the children who have sex, gays, rapists, child molesters, porn actors and actresses, young mouthy women, lesbians, bisexuals and such then come back and tell me about how everyone's going to rise up and do something about it.
No? Ok then well it's not that bad and they all deserve one another. Maybe we should send them 20 million roofing hammers and they can hack each other death unto the last one.
One thing I've learned from bullhorn radicals over the years is that we truly have zero business giving a shit about how anyone treats their own. Swarthy people with funny hats and stranger customs have to sort it out on their own without big bad bwana's interference.
