I'd have to read more to know for certain, but is there any sense of vast life experience being a factor here?
Animal kindgom-wise we humans aren't so big with the instinct.
If I'd been around when my Grandmother and Mother and Sisters and Cousins gave birth, and THEY had been around when their Grandmothers and Mothers and Sisters and Cousins gave birth, and had a clue about just how that all happens, I'd probably feel comfortable declaring Women The Experts. As it is, I wouldn't want ANY of them and no midwife or doctor nevermind be all by myself.
I'm going to go out on a limb and declare giving birth safely, at least for humans, a learned behavior.
