Anyone on the internet is subject to all sorts of threats. It has nothing to do with being a woman.
Ms. Sierra also fabricated some of threats. This has been proven and established.
I'll agree with you that "Anyone on the internet is subject to all sorts of threats."
However, threats against women often take on a more violent and sexualized tone--namely, threats of rape. These particular types of threats are directed largely at women.
Also, I can both agree and disagree with Lynn Harris' comment:
But whatever one's opinion of the incidents and Sierra's response to them, this story is a telling, and troubling, reminder that when it comes to criticism of work by women -- especially, perhaps, women in male-dominated fields -- misogyny is so often the default programming language.
Regardless, Lynn Harris, "them's fightin' words."

Don't hold your breath. Your comment contained 3 words Ben won't understand.
Seriously...is this the worst example of misogyny that you guys could find to write about? Look, no one's condoning these types of threats. But yes, everyone on the internet is subject to 'abuse' that would be criminal and threatening IF it had been in real life. Trying to eradicate that would be like trying to eradicate mean people.
Seriously, anyone who takes anonymous blog threats seriously enough to miss a conference and lock themselves in their home is extremely out of touch with reality, to say the least. And do you really think these are 'threats' in the real sense, as in, made with actual intent? If you can't tell the difference between someone saying "I know you live at 123 Main St and I'll be waiting for you" and someone saying "I'm gonna rape you, you *#$% &*@#"," then the mere mention of rape must completely rob you of your critical faculties. The point is that the goal of internet trolls is to say the most hurtful or disconcerting thing possible. If attacking a guy, they'll call him gay; if attacking a woman, they'll hurl sexist insults or rape 'threats'. Neither deserves to be taken seriously - both are just losers venting from their mother's basement.
Also, I'm extremely skeptical of 1) her claim that she has absolutely no idea what prompted the attacks, and 2) the idea that a technologist would get attacks on her personal blog simply for being a woman.
Dumbass for short, here is your source. The lady is a liar:
http://www.rageboy.com/blogger.html
She is making at least some of her claims up, period.
blow me. When you can substantiate your flatulence, open your piehole. Until then, don't. Always assuming when a woman claims harrasment or misogyny they are telling the truth when they, just as you, are full of shit.
I'm listening to the Iliad on CD right now.
I suppose it would have been wrong for Briseis, for example, to complain that she was kidnapped and given to Achilles as a slave merely because she was a woman, when all her male relatives had probably been slaughtered by Achilles and his friends just because they were men.
So I do get your point about all of the unfair accusations we terrible guilty women make against you saintly innocent men.
Life is hard all over, I get it, right.
I just really feel for you and all of your terrible pain that keeps you coming here day after day, night after night, crying out to the gods for justice.
I don't equate getting an anonymous threat on an unmoderated blog with a fictional account of rape, kidnapping and slavery.
Get over yourself.
Simple, if you open your mouth and make a bullshit accusation, don't be expect to believed just because you are a woman. Just ask the Duke lacrosse athletes were were accused of something there are utterly and completely innocent of, you jackass. Why don't you read the hyperlink I posted below rather than spout more inane bs? Too lazy? Obviously,
Too bad. I wonder why not?
Have you tried sacrificing a few bulls?
As for me, I've sexually harassed enough and even had my share of Internet death threats, so how you do think you're going to ever get ME to take YOU seriously?
It's just funny to see how dedicated you are.
Try the bulls. That might work better.
jackass, I actually sources and verify facts. Too many women claim to be harrassed that are just looking for a payday. It makes the ones with legitimate claims less credible. Women like you claim harrassment if a man refuses to look at you.
No offense but the exact same misogyny that Broadsheet is complaining about is rampant on the salon boards. And to top it all of you directly quoted her protest of so-called "protected speech" that is on the board as well (I agree with her lack of tolerance on that issue). As much as I feel sorry for Ms.Sierra I find your approach on the issue hypocritical.
Sorry boys - sending scary, vulgar photoshoped images is thretening and it is stalking. And it's damn scary.
Just becaues it's happening on-line dosen't mean it's happening in some distant place far away from this blogger. The person making this crazed threats (and they are crazy) could be this woman's next door neighbor. You're just assuming (hoping) it's some harmless, random, ticked-off reader.
When I was a teenager my nextdoor neighbor was murdered by her stalker. This isn't a joke you can just blow off.
Substantiate my claims? Sure. If anyone wants to see that you're an idiot all they have to do is go read your other posts.
You are like chicken little. Again, the sky is not falling. She fabricated much of what she stated. Trying verifying rather than just opening you fat piehole and spewing bile.
I'm not making any claims about the story at all. I'm just calling you an idiot.
Heck, I'll also call you a misogynist. I've been reading your posts since Broadsheet started and these are really the only conclusions one can reach.
