I'll agree with you that "Anyone on the internet is subject to all sorts of threats."
However, threats against women often take on a more violent and sexualized tone--namely, threats of rape. These particular types of threats are directed largely at women.
Also, I can both agree and disagree with Lynn Harris' comment:
But whatever one's opinion of the incidents and Sierra's response to them, this story is a telling, and troubling, reminder that when it comes to criticism of work by women -- especially, perhaps, women in male-dominated fields -- misogyny is so often the default programming language.
Regardless, Lynn Harris, "them's fightin' words."
