How old is too old to have babies?
  • young mom, old dad - who's the dummy?

I agree completely that old men should not become fathers. By the same token, what the heck is going on in the minds of the young women who go through with it?? SHouldn't they bear some of the blame too? Presumably they chose these older men to father their children knowing Dad was going to bow out of the picture prematurely.

My complaint about older moms is about what they are putting their bodies through, and whom they are enriching to do it. The fertility industry would not exist were it not for women who buy into the idea that "better late than never" applies to motherhood, and then pay handsomely to get knocked up. What are the long-term consequences for them? We won't know for a long time. For men - old or young - to make a baby, the procedure is pretty quick, very low-risk (at least to their bodies) and minimally demanding of their future, however much of it remains. They are not the ones keeping the fertility industry booming -- women are, especially older ones, and I can't help thinking that is sad and wrong. An old dad and a young mom at least gives the kids some shot at having one parent. An old mom and a test-tube - not so much.
