Return of the South Dakota abortion ban

The bill makes exceptions for the health of the woman and victims of rape and incest.

Not to be out-crazed

Check out the Roman Church's influence on an other-wise populist State:

Rep. James Kerzman, D-Mott, said his legislation, which would ban abortion except to save a woman's life, would take effect only if the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision is overturned.

These fundamentalist extremists...

will never stop trying to impose their fringe beliefs on the entire nation and then the planet. Never give an inch.

They need to get their own house in order and then leave the rest of us well enough alone.

South Dakota is a shit hole with an interstate running across it

Gas up when you get to Luverne just before the SoDak line and you can drive I-90 all the way across without buying anything in that backward place. You can stop and take a sh*t, maybe a cup of coffee, but don't spend any money in a state full of idiots.

About that rape clause

Any word on what that really means? give the fetus to the police for DNA testing is covered, but what are the broader implications? What exactly does that do? Serial rapists might be in the database if they were convicted, but is that helpful? Are potential partners going to have to come in and submit to a DNA test to prove that it wasn't them and that subsequently the woman wasn't (or was) lying about the circumstances? And if it does turn out to be a partner, what kind of he said she said is going to be involved? I accept that rape can happen inside a relationship, but what does SD say? Anyone willing to guess it's sticky?

-- No Name Given....

They are just doing this:

1) To make it as horrible as possible to deal with a rape abortion.

and

2) To control as much of every women's life as they possibly can.

Expect government issued chastity belts next.

Huh?

and DNA-supported instances of incest and rape.

Okay, I see the utility of DNA in determining incest, but rape? All DNA can prove is that intercourse happened, not whether it was forced. Doesn't the pregnancy itself at least strongly imply that intercourse has happened?

fetal blood??

Most of the conceptions whose termination is sought after rape or incest will involve early embryos, not fetuses. How do you get an embryo's blood? And why blood? How much DNA does it even contain per ml?

What a great choice. You can have your abortion now, but if your tissue fails our test, we just might have to incarcerate you.

afterthought has nailed it. They're just trying to intimidate women.

(Don't suppose they have Plan B in South Dakota. And, despite dire warning above, loved Mt. Rushmore and the Black Hills.)

Not part of the subject, but still...

Am I the only one who missed the news about the passing of ex-Sen. George McGovern's feminist wife, Eleanor, last week? Did Salon/s S.Dak. "stringers" fail to notice this as well?

And, of course, Hail and Farewell Molly Ivins! You will be missed!

Am I the only one who has a problem with "the victim's rigiht to choose whether to report the crime?"

Yes, reporting ANY crime can be difficult and stressful, but in the case of crimes involving bodily harm, not reporting means justice delayed...justice denied...and potential death or injury to another citizen.

All the more reason to do whatever it takes to ensure confidentiality for the victims of sex-related crimes.

infant DNA and rape; another issue here?

Isn't it true that fetal dna taken too early in pregnancy does not show father's, only mitochondrial (maternal)? Or have I been watching too many reruns of CSI? If you have to wait for your rape-or-incest caused abortion in order to prove that it was the result of incest, doesn't that make the abortion more dangerous to perform, as well as harder to get? As the prior writer noted, dna doesn't prove rape. Pregnancy does prove intercourse, though. Gotcha, ladies, you tramps. Next on the agenda; state-mandated and funded Viagra for all South Dakota's limp dicks.
