Why don't more women watch porn?

Both sexes seem to be turned on by dirty movies, but that doesn't mean women are tuning in.

The letters thread is now closed.

There's no mystery

Men are always hitting on women. Ergo, we don't need to watch as much porn.

Not Made for Women

I'm not sure this post sufficiently addresses the ways in which most porn tends to be heterosexual male-centered, and how that can affect women's "inner monologue" wrenching up the works. What kind of porn was viewed? Even assuming it's your fun of the mill, stay-within-the-limits kind of porn, it's worth noting that most porn tends to feature absurdly, exaggeratedly attractive females and average or below-average males. It's designed for men who want to watch and not feel threatened, and imagine that they, too, could be in this scenario. Yet when women watch, they see a not-so-desirable guy getting it on with a woman who's probably skinnier than them and in posession of larger assets. So add to that monologue a bit about, "That guy's kind of gross" and "I should really go to the gym more often." And you wonder why we're distracted?

There's feminist, women-centered porn out there for the taking. I hope this study contributes to real thought about female sexuality and what works and what doesn't, rather than what most medical and biological research does: use males as the model and then just tweak it to apply to females.

John Waters once described porn

As looking like heart surgery (or some type of surgery--I can't remember exactly). At any rate, what I thought he was getting at--and what bothers me (as a woman) about most porn--is the use of extreme closeups of disembodied genitalia. It's yucky clinical, and not at all arousing for me.

OTOH, I find myself absurdly aroused watching, say, Joe Sarno soft-core from the '70's. The men are attractive. The women are attractive, but have normal-sized and not-obviously-augmented breasts. The acting is better. There is an attempt at an interesting storyline.

maybe

Maybe "women" (since obviously all women are part of a hive mind and think exactly the same thoughts) haven't been taught since birth that it's their right to treat every person of the opposite sex as an piece of meat to be ogled and judged. Maybe "women" haven't been taught that their sexuality is uncontrollable and must be catered to in every way. Maybe "women" aren't willing to sacrifice every shred of mental innocence and self-respect for a cheap sexual thrill.

If...

If the study participants were watching porn with things in it that ACTUALLY MAKE WOMEN COME you might get different results.

But most porn amounts to things that a) look cool and/or b) feel good to men. And the things in porn that make women climax? Don't actually make women climax.

Say a guy comes all over my face. It looks neat. It deffinately involves the guy having an orgasm. I like it in the sense that I'm having sex, but its not rolling my eyes back in my head and making me scream. In porn, however, women have wild orgasm from a face full of spooge (and the women watching DO roll their eyes, but its accompanied by a derisive snort -- takes one out of the moment.)

How is the counting done?

Maybe I didn't read this carefully enough, but are researchers talking about how much porn women purchase? How are we not counting? I once worked in an adult video store, and we had as many women as men renting porn.

However, if we somehow aren't doing our part to support the adult entertainment industry, here's my theory on the issue:

1. Romance novels are very pornographic. Countless women doubtlessly enjoy these one-handed reads as a way to relax. They probably don't get counted, though, when it comes time to tally porn purchases.

2. Women might be more afraid of being "caught" with a history of viewing porn. I've always been nervous, for instance, that should I one day want to, oh, I don't know... run for political office? - that my history of pornographic purchases could somehow be dredged up. And can you imagine? Knowing that a male politician watched porn throughout his adult life would probably blow over in the press, but a female? I can just hear Rush Limbaugh now.... double-standards, yes. But these things do affect some women's decisions.

Get rid of the nasty men

I am glad that someone else has brought up the fact that in many porn videos, the men involved are incredibly unattractve. I find it hard to be arounsed by a video that features a gross looking guy pounding on a more attractive female. Why should the woman be the sexpot so to speak. I sometimes feel that my only recourse is lesbian or gay porn - I tend to find more attractive people in those contexts. God forbid the male ego is bruised when watching a porn in whcih a guy with great pecs and a sizeable cock is getting it on. But it is definitely ok for women with less than ample breasts and cellulite to feel bad about themselves because it seems that their men enjoy getting off on Jenna Jameson more than with their real partners. Of course I am over-generalzing hear and I am no expert on the porn industry but I can't help it.

There is just a lot of bad porn out there. Enough with the botched boob jobs. That does not turn me on at all. And why does it seem that almost ever heterosexual porn video ends with a facial cum shot. I know I am only speaking for myself here but if that always has to be the end all be all, then I will not be patronizing any porn sites or videos any time soon. Finally, I just feel that women are more inclined to spend their money on things other than porn. The membership fees to internet porn sites can be downright outrageous.

If anyone thinks I am wrong, then give me some recommendations. I will be more than happy to check them out.

Men, do NOT take sexual technique tips from porn --

-- if you're at all interested in pleasing your lady. If someone cranked on my clitoris like some films I've seen, I'd need reattachment surgery. The women must build up calluses over time or something - it looks painful, and not the least bit arousing. Ditto the 100-stroke-a-minute pounding. For five minutes straight. Again, calluses?
