Which restroom should transgender people use?

New York's Metropolitan Transit Authority allows commuters to use bathrooms based on their expressed, rather than biological, gender.

teams?

If the NFL, MLB, NHL, or MLB only had two teams, how boring would sports be? Such is life, boring if their were only male and female. And how boring would life be to only watch the game from home, because you can't make up your mind which team you'd prefer to go see. So, if identifying "teams" of people makes it easier for some sports-minded simple folk, so be it. If definitions are you're thing, here's a definition you should learn to identify with...IGNORANT. And your team...THE IDIOTS.

Not to belittle violence against women, but...

Just reacting to the quote: "When mtf trans activists bring up the huge incidence of violence in their community, they ignore the equally widespread and problematic history of violence against female-bodied people. Your safety isn't somehow more important than ours. Sorry."

How about on a per capita basis? I think that mtf trannies probably have it worse than women. The real issue is how many women are attacked by mtf transsexuals. I'd imagine that this figure is fairly low (although I haven't seen any studies about this). So, assuming that the violence in question is committed by male-identified individuals I don't see why them using the women's room isn't safer for everyone concerned. So if one group is threatened but not threatening, then safety is a red herring. Sorry.

I'll corroborate Anonymous's claim that women's restroom are dirtier

waaay back when I used to work in a roller rink in college, I had to clean both bathrooms, and the women's bathroom was invariably a filth hole compared to the men's room.

Cleaned 'em both

I've cleaned both the men's room and ladies room at a theater I worked at plenty of times. Women are by far messier. Both vandalize with markers about the same amount but I never had to scrub lipstick from walls/mirrors in the men's (and who'd kiss a mirror in a public restroom - yuck). In general men stack the little TP endcaps on the shelf - women drop them all over - along with wrappers of femine suplies - if your lucky the used supplies generally make it into the box - though the bags usually knocked down. I don't know if its a macho B-Ball thing or what but men generally get the paper towels into the wastebasket as well - the women's room alway has a "snowdrift" of paper towels around the trashcan(s).

I am an ally to the trans community

in part because my partner is trans. However, neither one of us like the idea of unisex bathrooms.

What needs to change is the violence against transgender people in the first place, not the sign on the bathroom door. That's just like putting a band-aid on the larger issue.

Trans people should feel safe going in the restroom of their preferred gender. But biological women should also have a safe space to go without men standing a few feet away in a small, enclosed area. When mtf trans activists bring up the huge incidence of violence in their community, they ignore the equally widespread and problematic history of violence against female-bodied people. Your safety isn't somehow more important than ours. Sorry.

Three bathrooms, ok. One bathroom with a lock on the door for everyone, fine. But a large, unisex multiple stall bathroom? That is just asking for trouble. I suspect the majority of women would feel violated and uncomfortable. Public bathrooms are already dangerous for us.

En

In large public places like stadiums or malls or theatres I can honestly say I don't care about mixing with strange men in the bathroom. It would be exactly like the restrooms we have now, with men and women standing in line to pee and there wouldn't be those annoying bitches having conversations about their dates and hogging the sinks and mirrors for 20 minutes while they chat and re-apply their make-up.

First off, I find plenty, plenty of urinated on toilet seats in the ladies room already. They don't sit on the seat and spray everywhere and don't wipe the seat before they leave. At least men lift the seat. Pubic hairs, bloody tampons, bloody applicators and pads have all been encountered in the public restrooms by me. Women are not any neater than men, women can be nasty pigs who don't flush. I have been in many a bar bathroom where I have to roll my pants up to make sure they can't touch the nasty nasty floor. The only nice, good smelling public restrooms I have ever been in are up scale department stores or resturants. Other than that they are pretty much all the same, bleach, pee and perfume smells.

Secondly, I personally don't like to ever have to take a dump in public. I only do it in emergencies because no one, no matter what sex likes the smell of other people's bowel movements and in large busy public restrooms you don't know who did what and I am a huge fan of the curtosy flush. I've had to use the restroom a few times while a male janitor is cleaning it, and it didn't bother me any more than when the women janitors are cleaning it other than the basic discomfort of knowing that the janitor can hear me pee.

Oh for f*$%'s sake

Most "unisex" bathrooms in the US are single-toilet, so that only one person can be in there at one time. Fine, no problem. But how, exactly, does that work in a huge public place, like a theater, stadium, museum, etc? Are we going to all wait in line, while we whizz, one at a time? Add more toilets, and then you've got men and women mixing together in the bathroom. Does anyone think that's a good idea? Anyone who does is a moron. Women, ask yourselves: Do you really want to be sitting in a stall with men just outside the door, when you have to take a big smelly dump? Do you want to have to deal with pubic hairs and pee stains on the seat?

The needs of the many outweight the needs of the few. And it doesn't get much more "Few" than transsexuals. I don't see the need for us to be worrying about this. They can use the Women's restroom.
