This week in antiabortion activism

An antichoice group loses tax-exempt status for illicit campaigning, and a deluded protester tries to blow up a women's health clinic.

The letters thread is now closed.

Was it Really a Mistake?

Using anti-abortion rhetoric to attack women's rights in general is nothing new. I can't help wondering if this was deliberate on some level - not necessarily the perp's, but perhaps his source of information?

Darwin Award Nominee

too bad he didn't succeed in taking himself out - one less wingnut who might reproduce!

I feel compelled to point out...

...that a single wingnut does not a movement make.

More on "tax exempt"

Tax deductions are a strong incentive for charitable foundations and wealthy individuals to donate money.

If a nonprofit loses its tax-exempt status, donations to it are no longer tax deductible.

Since nonprofits generally rely on such donations, this can be a killer.

Of course, people who donate money to Operation Rescue West are probably so passionate about hating abortion that the tax deductions don't matter. Thus they may continue providing ORW with funds.

How bad is it really?

Thank god nobody got hurt--but shouldn't we be pounding our "war on terra" politicians to prosecute these people like terrorists? And won't it make reasonable anti-choice citizens think, gee, what side is using terror tactics?

Crushing?

"Regardless, our crush on Catholics for a Free Choice continues -- it's keeping an eye on other antichoice groups going into this fall's election season, particularly Priests for Life and Catholic Answers -- and if Everson keeps making good on his promise to crack down on campaigning violations, we may even start crushing on the IRS"

CRUSHING? Can you please PRETEND to be a serious journalist, at least?

If you use language that is hard to take seriously, it makes it harder to take your message seriously. Maybe Broadsheet is "just" a blog, but can you raise the bar some?

"CRUSHING? Can you please PRETEND to be a serious journalist, at least?"

ALL CAPS? Can you please PRETEND to be a serious letter to the editor writer, at least?

If you use language that is hard to take seriously, it makes it harder to take your message seriously. Maybe this is "just" a blog comment, but can you raise the bar some?
