Divide the USA in half.
East of the Mississippi, all women. West of the Mississippi, all men.
It's obvious we can't possibly live in the same society together.
The guys could ship semen over the border once a year to make new little ones & then redistribute the kids once born. Or maybe we could just hire 3rd world women to carry the kids to term. I mean, their lives have no value anyways, other than being our maids or working in sweatshops so we can dress in style for cheap.
Nirvana..
Women-only roads? I hope so.
whether they are living in a society in which tradititions of male dominance are in force or not.
Thank you Rebecca Traister for reporting on two important news stories today. I really appreciate it when Broadsheet reports on things that are underreported elsewhere and that I would probably not know about otherwise.
Judging by the popularity of dating sites & all, I think the only women who want to be completely seperated from men are the men-haters like yourself.
keep telling yourself! The women-only cabs is a great idea - particularly when we know who drives cabs and the way they feel about women! As to your absurd statement, maybe lesbians and extreme feminists (read: lesbians), but I'd bet that most women would not want to live without men...
the question, though, (and you don't have the answer for anyone but yourself and maybe a few friends), is how lareg or HOW SMALL a percentage of these transactions end up with women NOT being seperate from men.
I was made aware of inappropriate taxi driver behaviour while living in Cairo in 2004. It was an almost daily occurrence there for foreign expat women to be propositioned or groped by drivers and - even more horrifying - it was also not uncommon for taxi drivers to openly masturbate while a Western woman rode in the backseat. These women-only taxi companies are a good way to combat that behaviour but, yeah, sad that they are forced to protect themselves in this way.
There are also women-only train cars in India. Also, in New Delhi, if you take a taxi from the airport, the police write down the taxi number and your destination. Rape is much less common in India than in, say, the US, but when traveling, it is certainly a relief to have these safeguards. A woman travelling alone anywhere is, unfortunately, in some danger. While it would be nice to live in a world where all men respected women, their bodies, and their personal choices, that is often not the reality. I, for one, am glad that women are being protected and encouraged to travel free from unwanted male attention. Now if only there were security guards at rest stops along U.S. freeways.
If I remember correctly, Broadsheet has a lively discussion a few months ago about the introduction of women-only train cars in Brazil.
and someone brought up the fact that, just like wtih train cars, could women who NOW take male cabs be perceived as really "asking for it" because they didn't choose to take the female-only cabs? Likewise, the women-only pink train cars run out of space, so some women may be forced to ride in the mixed car, and may be subject to even more harrassment now because they may be perceived as "not caring about being groped" or "loose women" because women who care and who are not loose take the women-only car. Yeah, it sounds preposterous, but i think it would make sense to someone who already thinks it's okay to grope women in taxis or train cars.
Another thought i had, about the jealous husband who was upset by his wife being driven everywhere by men, this is very heteronormative. Could lesbians grope women in women-only cabs and traincars? What it if it turned into a secret sapphic society?...
"This is such a compelling story about women finding ways to unravel modes of oppression."
This would be a lot more compelling if the Iranians were hammering on the men for there vile behavior.
Once again, society (Iran's in this case) is requiring the victims to accommodate the victimizers.
As is true of all instances of oppression, the problem is the oppressors - men, in this case - not the women - the oppressed.
Okay, this is my theory. When you are a member of a strict religion with patriarchial teachings, the sexual teachings are akin to "women rarely if ever want sex, men always want sex, so women have to be the gatekeepers of men's morality. Women must dress modestly to not engage men in their rapacious sexual nature and women must not be alone with men because men cannot help their sexual desires"
When you go around teaching society that women never want sex and men always want it, isn't it going to stand to reason that many men are going to imbue this doctrine that they must rape women because women never want sex? That they must force themselves onto women becuase women don't want men, they may just want a husband to pay their way and make babies, but they don't really enjoy or want sex. What a confusing message to send people that is completely contrary to biology and that each sex is capable of self control, even if they fail once in a while.
While LeCastor makes an interesting point, the fact is the many of the men in these cultures (theirs and ours) already think it's ok to rape and grope women, knowing that there are segregated options isn't going to make them more likely to rape and grope women who don't use the segregated services, they were already doing it before the segregated services arose which is why the services started.
I understand where that insane husbands jealousy comes from, while watching a 30 Days on Muslims, the Christian male who was learning the Muslim religion, could not be alone with the man's wife because he said it's a teaching of the Koran that whenever a woman and man are alone together there is always Satan in the room. That to me is just an insane lack of trust, lack of trust in your spouse, lack of trust in your fellow Muslims' faith to not sleep with your wife.
