While I might quibble a bit with Hirshman's criticism of feminists - that they didn't do enough to shake up the homefront, but golly, they were shaking up everything else, for crying out loud! There was no time left over and Rome wasn't built in a day - I think she is spot on with her points about women quitting work. It is devastating to their long-term financial health. The US doesn't like children or families - never has, and I doubt that it ever will. Any woman who quits work for more than a year to care for a baby (or a sick parent for that matter) is courting financial disaster.
Ms. Hirshman, I wouldn't worry too much about those well-heeled New Yorkers. Check back with them in about ten years when the four Ds of life have put in an appearance: Death, Disability, Divorce, and Desertion. They'll be singing a different tune, I assure you.
By the way, most of the young men I know - middle class professionals - do not want a wife to stay home. Are you crazy? They want a wife with a good education and a good income - better to help them weather the ups and downs of American capitalism.
