Sorry, but they don't have suits to fit all kinds of women's bodies, especially those of us who are larger than a d-cup. When I saw this story I thought they would be selling suits by bra size and waist measurements, but instead they offer the same dress sizing as every other swimsuit company. While I applaud the fact that they offer mastectomy suits, I wish they could offer something for the sisters on the other end of the spectrum.
Everyone raves about Land's End swimsuits, so last year I finally broke down and bought one, only to be terribly disappointed. I even went through the trouble to design one of their "virtual models," weighing and measuring myself and entering those (scary) numbers into their program.
The suit, when it arrived, looked wretched on me, and the fabric was chintzy. At least I wasn't in a public dressing room with a three-way mirror!
For real options, including seeing real women modeling the suits, I head to swimsuitsforall.com.
I read the article and went to the Land's End site, and there was no "solution" for my not-particularly-unusual body type. I have a well-proportioned figure, and I was looking for an underwire bikini for comfort and support. Nothing. All of the underwire suits have way too much coverage for someone who's comfortable with her body.
In other swimsuit news, the Times also reports that men's swim trunks will be shorter this year and will feature more leg. Does that mean that guys will be tugging at their suits all summer long, the way women have been for decades?
Men's shorts and trunks have gotten absurdly long. Now, many of them end well below the knee, sometimes just a couple of inches below where full length pants would end. It's silly and impractical, and frankly makes it difficult to keep cool. I'm glad the tide is turning.
There are some of us who don't enjoy displaying our generous tummies. Tankinis are a great idea, but almost all of them are too short for women like me.
I have had mostly good luck with Lands End swimming suits, although the last one I bought disappointingly only lasted a year and a half. (The one before that made it through five years of heavy use!)
Mostly I stick to Tyr and Speedo; both have a nice variety of one-piece suits geared towards competitive swimmers and lap swimmers. I've swum in this kind of suit most of my life and feel most comfortable in it. They hold up pretty well, although the chlorine always gets them in the end if you put in a lot of pool time. I also have a Jantzen tankini for hanging out at the pool or beach.
Speedo has a line of swimming suits for aqua aerobics that are more conservatively cut (some even have little skirts) and come in a larger range of sizes than their competition suits. (Competition suits typically only go up to size 40, the equivalent of 14/16, although lycra suits have a fair amount of stretch and can accomodate larger-sized women.)
Speedo and Tyr also have two-piece styles that are more conservative than a typical bikini but don't cover up as much as a tankini.
I love Land's End, and have noticed in the several spring/summer catalogs I have received so far this season that they seem to be emphasizing swimwear much more this year than formerly.
So they offer swimwear for every shape and size. Next, let's see them pictured on models of every shape and size. I can't be convinced that a suit will minimize my bust and emphasize my waist or whatever if it's shown on a model who needs no such visual trickery to begin with.
Even Land's End swimsuits reveal way more leg than many women would prefer.
Try Googling "modest swimwear" if you're interested in swimsuits that actually cover as much of you as regular clothing. (Yes, some of the websites have creepy conservative-religious undertones.)
So this isn't news, it's news to me and couldn't have come at a better time. Five months along and I look like a pear on twigs, everything load bearing in my body hurts. Nothing makes me feel so much like my old self like swimming, but I've been so disaffected with swimsuits I end up waiting for a skinny dipping opportunity to get in the water anymore. It'd be nice to waddle to the local pool without getting arrested or feeling like a beached whale.
Um...Lands' End has been doing the "Kindest Cut" suit for an awful long time time. I think I was in high school (~10 yrs ago) when I noticed them in the catalogue. How is this news? Or is it news just because it was in the news?
