Obviouly the situation is more complicated than may have been thought, which is pretty typical as more is discovered.

This is poor science reporting. You're trying to extrapolate some sort of political and social statement about humans from this, but failing due in no small part to a misunderstanding of the science.

Just for starters, you end by suggesting that women's sometimes preference for sweet funny guys shows that they aren't selecting for genetics. Humans have many sexually selected traits, some physical and some behavioral. It's pretty well accepted that a nightingale sings to woo the ladies, that the ladies select for the nightingale with the best song. If you accept the Sexy Son Hypothesis, the Darwinian logic for this is that the sons from the best singer will produce the greatest number of grandchildren. It's entirely consistent with the Sexy Son Hypothesis to say that sweetness and humor in humans is entirely the same. So your supposed example of how humans don't behave consistently with the Sexy Son Hypothesis is, in fact, a perfect example of the Sexy Son Hypothesis. Humor is a _perfect_ example of genetic bling.

When Roughgarden says "Each kind of male has its own way of going about its life. Each works out fine," she talking about how different species have different genetic strategies. Trying to draw conclusions from this to humans just makes you look foolish and scientifically illiterate.

Topples Darwin's theory? Nonsense. Darwin made it clear: any trait that leads to having a greater number of breeding descendants is "fit." Survival of the fittest has nothing to do with bashing heads, beating up competitors, or showing your stuff unless that leads to more surviving and reproducing offspring. There's nothing really new about the conclusion, only the findings for each of those individual species. Truly, there is no "natural" pattern across animals -- only within species, and even there we are finding that variation is wider than we ever imagined.

by the way it has been established that this behavior, as well as lots of male defenses, or attempted defenses, against it is virtually univeral in all species in which the male helps raise the young. the only exceptions appear to be in cases where cheating is a virtual physical impossiblity due to extremely harsh conditions

Not a group of people, a very destructive and one sided (anti-male) philosophy (modern feminism as opposed to classical feminism, that is).
