Men are picky too, and for evolutionary reasons.
Men are highly motivated to have sex with anyone under any conditions (obviously I am overstating a little to make the point).
But men are also hard-wired to pick out the "best mate" for procreation purposes. That's why men prefer to have sex with pretty women (whatever the standard for attractiveness in age age may be). Very few men would want to have sex with someone they consider particularly ugly.
The reason why it matters so much is that women use the fact that they are pickier to "prove" that they are objectively better, nicer, more attractive, whatever than men and to "prove" that society makes life hell for women and heaven for men;
I'm not exactly sure how that argument works.
if it weren't so why then women would be as hot for men as the other way around. Obviously for this argument to have any credibility it is necessary to maintain that women are at least in principle as indiscrimately horny on average as men.
But women are certainly hornier than society would like to admit. When contraceptives finally rolled around, what happened? The free-love sixties, and then almost immediately the "morality" backlash erupted. Because now that women don't get stuck with babies every time they have sex, our repressed society has to use other means to convince women not to have sex, e.g. morality, virtue, piousness, etc. That's the whole point of the purity balls. The purity people's argument is that they are done to protect women from men, but, as i have been arguing from the beginning, they are done to protect women from their own sexualities.
The reason it is usually suspected that this is the real agenda of the discussion is that the same people who insist on the one hand that women like sex as much as men with the next breath are talking about how men can't/won't/aren't doing what it takes to make themselves attractive to women.
I don't think i've made that argument, nor have any of the other posters here.
When I start hearing lots of women saying they can't get anyone under any conditions I'll start buying that the situations are comparable.
What? Are you crazy? how many times have i heard from men AND women that they go to a party hoping to meet someone/hook up with someone/sleep with someone, and they come home empty-handed?! Men are picky people too, and the "straight men who have homosexual sex because they can't get any women" is a very small phenomenon, i think.

I don't think you have but many threads here have gone on page after page with precisely that argument. Obviously this subject doesn't lend itself to rigorous proof, but when was the last time you heard a man say "I'm really horny and there are women around who will sleep with me, but I just can't tolerate the thought of sleeping with any of them". I don't believe men ever say this and women say it all the time.

1) what a man-hating thing to say, that men will sleep with anything that moves. that just denies that men have standards and emotions and can be horny without acting on it if they don't feel it. you deny men any complexity whatsoever.
2) i mean, really?? you never hear men say this?? what about yourself (i'm assuming you're a man)? has this ever happened to you? I mean, i've met a lot of people, i went to college and business school, i've been to frat parties and night clubs and hung out with all sorts of people, and i've men many men with standards and emotions.
I'm just aghast that you would think men are just simple-minded, emotionless fuck machines.

Not at all. Men are not just simple-minded emotionless fuck machinces who will fuck any "normal woman" given the opportunity. I guess we're speaking from our own experiences. Perhaps your experience supports your opinion. By from my observations, i can say that i know many guys who, given the choice between sleeping with a normal woman, and not, would rather not. and no, they're not gay, and they're not pussies, or ugly or socially inept. men have standards and emotions too, that's all i'm saying.

Well, it's not what you were asking earlier, but even so. no, i don't many such women, though i know some who will hook up with any willing guy. in our society, these women are deemed "desperate" or "sluts," whereas you're saying it's men's natural condition.
but my question is, does the fact that there are few such women conclusively prove that women are "naturally" less sexual than men, or does it simply show evidence of effective societal conditioning?
