exactly the same. A bunch of power hungry judegmental assholes who want to control your life.
GOP-women's reproduction
Liberals-no smoking for you!
Just more confirmation of my life's philosophy, most people are stupid assholes. No wonder Paris Hilton is famous.
No one I know 'from the left' has time to write such hatred - they're out to change the world for the better! Better describe such rantings as the sexist, homophobic non-ideas they are.
Lefty blog readers know that not all readers of lefty blogs are, in fact, lefties. Someone who wears a handle like "bootedbydailykos" as a badge of honor? Probly wasn't booted for being a card-carrying Communist. Someone probably checked out his comment history and realized he had a record of spouting GOP astroturf.
And there are conservative trolls who show up regularly in the comments of blogs like Eschaton (Atrios) in the guise of liberals spouting ugly language. They are generally outed immediately and virtually tarred-and-feathered.
This doesn't mean that there aren't misogynists who consider themselves liberal, but these folks are out there, and it's worth knowing how to tell the difference between someone with a valid, dissenting point of view, a clueless jackass, and a troll bent on dragging the level of discourse into the mud and smearing us all by association.
I suppose the point of this was to supply a sense of 'balance' - as if BroadSheet were saying "yeah, we're pretty liberal here, but see, we also know that liberals can be really cruel at times, just like conservatives."
Perhaps admitting that your side has flaws will lend a dab of credibility.
The thing is, people who are willing to see both sides, who read and examine issues from all angles, who aren't convinced that the position is more important that the issue, have seen this behaviour from liberals for six years now. It still retains the stench of losing poorly.
I remember hearing a caller to a radio show on KQED in San Francisco in early 2001 rant for five minutes about Bush being a 'meat-puppet' who should be removed. Keep in mind, this preceded 9/11, Iraq, and most of the genuinely questionable issues arose concerning his leadership. It was knee-jerk "it's just not fair" reaction from liberals who are human, and therefore as capable of nasty, brutish behaviour as anyone.
I guess my only point is - so what? A bunch of liberals show themselves to be idiots with no class, and BroadSheet repeats their pathetic remarks for what purpose?
...those dumbshits.
As a moderator for a liberal political board, as well as a long time participant, I know that Republicans don't have a lock on willful stupidity, not by a long shot.
For me,though, when liberals are hateful and gruesome and intolerant I am doubly upset, not only because hypocricy is always disturbing, but because I still keep trying to think of us as the "good guys".
Still....there is a lot of stupid on the planet...makes sense that some would land on us.
sigh....
Was this the author's first experience reading a blog? Newsflash: Some people who post comments say very ugly things. I doubt these comments are representative of what those "on the left" might think of the wedding, which is probably closer to "who gives a &^%$%."
Sorry. Rebecca Traister can't live in this glass house. She's done way too many pieces in Salon with broad, ugly stereotypes of men as emotional cripples and simplistic creatures compared to the inherently rich and complex lives women lead. I don't disagree that there are jackasses in the world: left, right, center and apolitical. And I don't disagree with the point being made here. Traister making it though robs it of any credence.
But I do have to wonder what is the point of pointing out the obvious in this blog entry? Is it because the left and their causes are coddled too much in the media and political policy in this country? That must be it. Liberals have it too easy so we really, really, really need to pick our selves apart and then wonder when and how Roe got overturned or why gay men having sex in their homes is illegal again.
This cattiness is so...shallow.
And the observation that both sides engage in this type of irrelevant criticism, and that giving out cheap shots at least *should* be beneath the dignity of the "Liberal side," but apparently is not, is spot-on.
I clicked on the link to see if there was any validity whatsoever to the comments regarding the ugliness of the dress and the groom. The dress is not so bad. It's not my taste, but so what? And John Kerry is at least as homely--if not homelier--than Mr. Senor. And--again--so what? And what's with the whole "gay" thing? --Even if it were true, so what? "They" used to smear George Stephanopoulos with that one, if memory serves, and didn't "they" claim that his marriage was a sham, as well?
The sad fact is that the political sphere has been hit with the same sort of shallow "looks-ism" that's been a widely-accepted aspect of the entertainment industry for years. The better-looking candidate is likely to be elected, regardless of his/her political views or talents. (Face it: For all of the chimpanzee caricatures that have been done on him, our own presidential version of Mrs. Malaprop is not a bad-looking man, and that alone probably got him a lot of votes.) Political commentators continually make snide remarks about the width of the backsides of various candidates' wives. Beautiful women are assumed to have given out sexual favors to have gotten where they are, and the homely ones (who are at least assumed to be competent) have even worse comments thrown at them.
The lines of distinction between politics and entertainment have become increasingly-blurred over the years. And the sort of shallowness that we're seeing here is the end result.
I don't know, maybe Susie Bright wrote an absolutely HILARIOUS template letter and invited everyone to pile on.
I mean, that would be a bandwagon you could jump on, right?
Ya know, as long as you're not above venting hate at people you don't know and all that.
Good news! the first step to recovery is recognizing you're part of the problem...er..have a problem. Whatever.
