Salon,
Are times so tough that you are now having college interns write copy for the site? Please don't get me wrong---I am a rabid Salonite, but I winced with every hamhanded reference to the "postmodern" and "postmodernity," which is about as "emerging" as George Michael and Andrew Ridgely's popstar careers.
Your writer's description of "play" was especially ironic (and in irony, perhaps I'm being less postmodern than modern), since the half-hearted effort to deconstruct the shopping list of binarisms was less concerned about showing the "instability" of the binary oppositions themselves and more concerned with demonstrating some sort of indeterminate middle ground between the two poles, which, of course, unwittingly retrenched the boundaries of the binary opposition.
And what exactly is "multidimensional postmodernity" anyway? Sounds cool---it makes me feel cool, sort of the way I feel when I'm sitting in my George Nelson Coconut Chair knockoff, but not as cool as I feel listening to Smash Up Derby as they imagine musical coitus between Annie Lennox and Kurt Cobain.
Signed,
An aging postmodernist
P.S. The poststructuralist revolution didn't so much fail, as it stalled. A sympton of this? When journalists make a practice of using the word "deconstruction" as a synonym for "dismantling" or when Salon reads Terry Eagleton's "Literary Theory: An Introduction" and preens in the mirror like Christian Bale in American Psycho.
This has to be april fool's right? Who cares about Brad? If he was not this cute white boy who would even repor ton him? And ok Angelina Jolie is pregnant with his child. Get over it. There are more important issues in this world. And yes even if they never get married.
