Maybe they should do a poll of how many college men use date rape drugs during spring break.
We think your collective heads need a nice, long soak.
American society values women more highly than men; examples include military combat duty, "women and children first", and the myriad of social services for homeless women that don't allow homeless men to partake of.
Would love to see both the boys and the girls calm down a bit. As a mom to three teenagers, I'm getting more immersed in this than I'd ever prefer. Parents of boys better start realizing their sons' promiscuity has (grand)child support liability for parents if the son is a minor. With DNA testing, the sons are responsibile for their actions in ways never before enforced. Hopefully, sons as well as daughters learn to respect others and to not use them. The days of taking what you can get have to end.
I thought the Time essay hit the tone found in girls these days, out-of-control and acting out. The perception everyone is doing it makes it even more a reality to those who might not otherwise partake.
One friend compared it to the 70's and 80's when gays came out of the closet and enjoyed new found promiscuity, which was then tempered by AIDs. Now gay marriage is the new buzzword.
Let's hope not too many lives are lost and harmed before teens realize you can have fun without alcohol/drugs, that the best intimate relationships are with your best friend, not a stranger, and private moments should not be documented on a public website.
Parents and communities have to do more to teach self-respect and respect for others to these kids. And turn off the TV!
I actually found the Time article through CNN.com, after seeing a video clip there about a woman who attended a fraternity party, got drunk, and was filmed having sex with people there. The video ended up on the internet, and the woman transferred colleges and later tried to kill herself.
It was interesting to read Cox's story on the heels of a story about someone who had done something she said she was pressured to do against her consent, and was very uncomfortable with afterward.
I suppose there is some veracity to Cox's point, I can imagine doing crazy things when drunk, but there are some things that I just can't imagine doing under any circumstance that would be described as consciousness, but in the end, it seems that people do in fact get out of control, and we should try to make sure that this can happen, so they don't let it happen to them against their will.
As for the boy's issue, I think we don't see the headline because we assume that men think with their penises, and that it's a foregone conclusion that they will have sex given the opportunity, and are less at risk both emotionally and physically.
That's not always true, but it sure isn't going to get any better if we keep ignoring the fact that men are part of the equation.
Thanks, Katharine. While you make a perfect "can't see the forest for the trees" point about wouldn't it be great if we also held males to a standard of behavior (of course it would), you conveniently forget that biological fact: females can get pregnant from that kind of stupid behavior.
While you keep playing semantic games with headlines and confuse freedom of speech with "anything goes" females will continue to suffer from the madonna/whore complex we on the Left tolerate because we're too damn afraid to talk about morals and self-respect for fear of sounding a teensy bit like those idiots on the Right who wish to legislate morality for everyone. News Flash: I don't need laws for or against to have self-respect or to teach it to my sons and daughters. I don't need to wait for a headline to be properly worded for me to say flashing your titties for a string of plastic beads is just wrong. It is not a a feminist cry of joyous self-expression. It is what a stupid slut does. And I tell my sons that what a real man does is not be there in the first place. That is not a 'party' nor a rite of passage. It is immature to abuse alcohol. Public drunkeness is not cute or funny. I don't need Republicans to tell me that, I already know it. And if I don't teach that to my children in word and deed then I am a shitty parent, regardless of what political party I'm registered with.
Grow a spine. Then you won't need a headline to guide your path.
I hope that wasn't a serious question
Drunk girls who act like frat boys are not attractive.
Drunk frat boys who act violent and entitled are a lot less attractive.
Honestly, if parents are really that concerned, they can just cut off funding these vacations, and stop paying for their kid's expenses and force them to take on a job during college. Cut the cord folks, they are in their late teens and twenties, old enough to take on the responsibility for their own support. Once the funding is cut, spring break turns into an opportunity to make money, not a spectacle.
Yes, heterosexual unions by definition involve both men and women, boys and girls, but one of the salient facts about human beings is the utter and complete asymmetry of the reproductive process. While the double standard may not be "fair", it is not completely irrational.
You know the old saying, boys will be boys. It's the girls who need hand holding and scolding, apparently.
Under the false pretense of liberation, these young women have to be inebriated to engage in risky sexual behavior that often not only results being clumsily nailed by a sweaty, heaving, fratboy, but also anorgasmia. A lot of these women are not self-aware enough to understand how to have a sexually gratifying experience. While alcohol may inhibit fear to some degree, it also impedes sexual growth and responsibility.
