These are women who are flouting tradition to fight for their lives. This is how feminism starts within a culture. It's an important moment.
For more information on the Zimbabwean resistance, in which women play a significant role, go to www.sokwanele.com (sorry, I don't know how to HTML that in as a link). The situation in Zimbabwe is easy to write off as a "typical" African country (whatever that means, of course) - but the decline in Zimbabwean civil society, not to mention the economic decline, is absolutely shocking, and due to the effects of a regime that has ossified itself into dictatorship. International sanctions seem to have so little teeth (or are so little enforced) that despite a travel ban to Europe, Mugabe can go to the funeral of the Pope. This is a major human rights issue which should be getting more attention. This Valentine's Day march isn't an isolated incident. Thanks for running it, Broadsheet.
