No s-e-x on Valentine's Day

Decreeing a "Day of Purity," the right wants kids to celebrate not having sex on Feb. 14.

The letters thread is now closed.

Gimme an S...

At first blush, it's a wonder that these folks ever manage to reproduce. What bedroom could be dark enough? But upon reflection, there's no one on the planet so obsessed with sex as a fundamentalist. They see it everywhere, and fear it anywhere, since it might divert cash and attention from the money-collection palaces that are our modern churches, mosques, synagogues, TV channels and web-sites.

Taking the joy out of yet another holiday...

It's the anti-sex league!

Friday, February 3, 2006 08:42 AM

Is this so different then Ensler's "V" Day?

And doesn't she also strip Valentines Day of the romantic and sexual element, replacing it with a politicized screed about domestic violence?

Friday, February 3, 2006 09:00 AM

What's the difference?

If I have to call it Christmas, they have to call it St. Valentine's Day!

Sex Ed

What a way to ruin a perfectly good Hallmark holiday. Now if they would just give the little tykes some real sex education, it might even be worthwhile.

Actually, not a bad idea...

...when you consider the fact that the religious aspect of St. Valentine's Day is to honor an early Christian martyr and presumed religious celibate. Therefore a day emphasizing non-physical forms of affection makes sense from this standpoint.

Hah! (Day of Purity)

This is being marketed by people that didn't have the courtesy to NOT procreate!

Given the sex-type-thing scandals amongst the 'religious' right and the startling news that these 'virginal' teens don't consider oral sex s-e-x, this 'campaign' just has creepy written all over it...

I think that people's lack of being able to deal with their own sexuality on an adult basis is what is making this country the new laughing stock of the 'civilized' world. These people really need to get a life and a grip on reality. The horse is out of the barn and disavowing any assistance for keeping the girls 'unpregnant' and 'uninfected' should be a greater goal than being 'virginal' in a very cold and vicious world...

As long as humans are allowed to feel their sexuality there will be sex on Valentines day. The weirder part of Valentines Day is the massacre that it 'celebrates'...

It's amazing the depths the 'religious' right will fall to prove the point that humans shouldn't have fun being human... Yet another societal event corrupted by the 'puritans'...

I'm with Jeffrey

When the ever-humorless Eve Ensler takes this holiday, and takes what is supposed to be an ancient celebration of romance and uses it as a personal PR vehicle because her career is going nowhere, it's noble, brave and filled with integrity. When a group of right-wingers do the same thing, it's reactionary, threatening, and kind of stupid. Aren't those ignorant Christians funny? I would like to see Eve Ensler put on an ice floe and pushed out to sea. The whole V-day thing is a transparent, shockingly uncreative way to take her lame brand and give it some staying power. She crusades for freedom of expression! She allows women to openly, freely, joyously speak the liberating word "vagina"! She fights against domestic violence, although it's purely symbolic, and therefore pretty meaningless. And she titilliates everyone by linking sex and violence. What crap.

Is there a counter-demonstration?

Because I'm all for signing on to a "Day Of Frolic" if one's going on.

Oh, and tangentially related to this, is there any chance you might implement a filter for these posts? It would be nice to be able to sift out the anonymous posts, because overwhelmingly they're either worthless or trolls. If the writer can't stand by their words, why should anyone bother to read them?

(There are also a couple guys I'd like to personally filter out who pop up regularly and seem to only want to redirect the discussion into whatever woman-bashing they currently fancy, but they're easily ignored by just spotting their names.)

No vaginal intercourse maybe...

... but the kids will still be reveling in beej's and buttsex. Do these people have any idea the extremes that they are driving their kids to? We might have had some backseat romps in my day but not backDOOR romps for chrissakes.

So...what's wrong with kids wanting to stay pure?

All you do is bash the idea. What's your idea?
