A bank for women opened many (25?) years ago in NYC. What happened to that? Does anyone remember?
It's an interesting concept. In my seemingly never-ending search for a financial advisor, it definitely seems that banking services are either marketed towards men or my parents. I'm not saying I need my mutual funds to come in pink prospectuses, but how about something that at least hints at valuing single, high-earning women as customers?
Since dealing with men is apparently a problem in almost all circumstances. It's tricky though, if men are totally segregated from women how will women be able to control them?
It was the First Women's Bank, which I believe was chartered in 1975.
Wasn't there a Women's Bank started in New York in the 90s?
The Women's National Bank, which opened in Washington D.C. in 1977 (the name was changed later to Adams National Bank), was the first federally chartered bank owned by women, and was especially targeted at serving women and minority-owned businesses. My wife and I were charter depositors shortly after the bank opened. We've since moved away from the area, but it looks like the bank is still in business and doing good work. http://www.adamsbank.com/index.html
There may be similar institutions elsewhere in the country.
It was founded in 1976 on the corner of Front and Halleck Streets in San Francisco. I think there's a McDonald'd there now.
