Come again, Cindy?

We love New York Post gossip columnist Cindy Adams. But sometimes we need help understanding her.

The letters thread is now closed.

translation

In right-wing Newspeak, "expressing your opinion" is code for "blatantly lying, but in a way that helps our cause." The same way "rewriting history" is code for "telling inconvenient truths", and "freedom" is code for "American military hegemony". Just replace those phrases, and things both Cindy and George W. say start to make more sense.

Judith Miller has the right to blatantly lie on our behalf.

Critics of the war have been trying to tell inconvenient truths.

Our soldiers in Iraq are fighting for American military hegemony.

If you're against the war, you're against American military hegemony.

Operation Enduring American military hegemony.

It all makes a lot more sense. Someone should really put out a translation guide.

bring on the hot flashes

Ms. Adams is saying she's a fan of the "access [...] reporters like us are supposed to have." That access is what Renee Montagne, in an NPR interview with Miller, called "coziness with sources." Miller's coziness with Scooter and others got her Valerie Plame's name -- and, presumably, allowed her to feed us all a line on WMD. If firing Miller is the Gray Lady's menopause, then I only wish menopause had come sooner.

The bit about voicing your opinion in New York? Beats me. Miller has been a little reticent about voicing her opinion -- except when defending herself.
